[01] SIMITIS-CLERIDES MEETING ON THE ANNAN PLANAthens, 16 November 2002 (15:35 UTC+2)Decisions will be made after taking under consideration the overall outcome of the negotiations. The goal will be to reach an agreement without delays but this will depend on the will of the other side as well. However, everything not regarded as satisfactory will be rejected. The above were stated by Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis after the meeting he had in Athens with Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides on the Annan plan for the solution of the Cyprus issue. The final response on the plan will be given by the National Council of Cyprus on Monday, stressed Mr. Simitis, adding that according to Mr. Clerides, most of the Cypriot political parties are in favor of the opening of the negotiations. The Greek Prime Minister stated that they examined the Annan plan in detail and dealt with the points which, according to both sides, need either intensive negotiations or clarifications. The Prime Minister stated that the decisions concern the Greek Cypriot side and expressed Greece's total support to the efforts made for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the country's accession into the EU. From his side, Cypriot President Glafkos Cleriodes stated that if the solution is not operational new tensions will be created. Responding to a question on whether there will be developments before the Copenhagen Summit meeting, Mr. Clerides stated that this will be seen when negotiations get underway and will depend on the political will displayed by the other side. Mr. Denktash has postponed his return to the occupied territories of northern Cyprus from New York because of his health condition. [03] KONSTANTOPOULOS: MIXED FEELINGS ON ANNAN PROPOSALAthens, 16 November 2002 (20:19 UTC+2)Greece's political powers should place our national interests above all else and move very cautiously, pointed out the President of the Coalition of the Left, Nikos Konstantopoulos, speaking to his party's Central Committee today, which discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue. Now as a country and as a nation we are at a crucial crossroads and it is time for the utmost sobriety and caution. We are at the brink of a historic moment, he underlined. The President of the Coalition stressed that the plan of the UN Secretary General on resolving the political problem of Cyprus did not fall out of the sky, and added that the pressuring and extortionate time schedules it includes are not a coincidence. This plan is the product of the international juncture as it has been formed today and the correlation of the powers that characterize it, he said. Mr. Konstantopoulos underlined that the Annan proposal is one of compromising a number of problems and a whole network of relations, however he noted that it would be unprecedented and uncritical of us to beautify the plan. The plan, he said, contains positive and negative points, which must definitely be dealt with. He also noted that we must not underestimate the danger there is of the strict time schedules working at the expense of an agreement and a solution. All this means that during the negotiations to take place, the Greek and Greek Cypriot sides must be very well prepared, since our goal is a national strategy and understanding.
