    A square at the center of the Afghan capital of Kabul was named after Alexander the Great in a show of gratitude to the Greek peacekeeping force deployed in the country, which has undertaken to destroy landmines and repair city streets and schools.

    According to a news report on the Athens newspaper "Ethnos", the two schools that were rebuilt had been destroyed by the air strikes and the everyday work of the Greek peacekeeping force included the construction of an ammunition warehouse, destruction of landmines, repair of the road and electricity supply infrastructure and medical care.

    Greece will also finance the restoration of the Museum of Kabul and work on the project is expected to start soon.

    [02] DRAFT BILL ON SOCIAL SECURITY

    The Greek government prepares the draft bill on the social security system reform. Besides what has already been agreed upon on the pension age limits and the preconditions necessary for a worker to retire, the draft bill will also include regulations on the secondary social security funds.

    The draft bill will also deal with the complementary social security that will be offered by private insurance companies, according to an interview by Minister of Labor Dimitris Reppas with the economic magazine Economikos Tachidromos.

    Mr. Reppas backs part-time employment with strict guarantees for the workers, while on the 35-hour working week, he stated that the choices that could hurt the interests of the national economy should be avoided.

    [03] THE CONDITION OF CHRISTOS LAMBRAKIS IS SERIOUS BUT STABLE

    The health condition of media mogul Christos Lambrakis is serious but stable, according to a statement issued by his doctors, who stressed that the next 48 hours will be critical.

    In the early morning hours today, Mr. Lambrakis was taken to an Athens hospital suffering from a heart attack and underwent an angioplasty operation successfully.

    [04] KARAMANLIS ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

    Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis referred to the problem of illegal immigration within the framework of his two-day tour of the Dodecanesse Islands.

    Mr. Karamanlis stated that the European People's Party is trying to adopt a common European immigration policy and form a European Coast Guard.

    [05] THE GREEK ARMED FORCES MOBILIZATION HAS BEEN LIFTED

    The Council of Defense that met yesterday, chaired by Minister of Defense Yiannos Papantoniou, decided to lift the armed forces mobilization that was in effect in Greece for the past 28 years.

    The Presidential Decree in question was put into effect on July 20, 1974 right after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

    [06] MITSOTAKIS: I HOPE THAT EVERYTHING WILL GO WELL

    Former Prime Minister and honorary president of right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy Konstantinos Mitsotakis left for Phoenix, Arizona this morning to undergo an operation to treat a ventricular aorta aneurism.

    In statements he made to reporters, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that he hopes that everything will go well, stressing that the operation he will undergo is a routine one.

    Mr.Mitsotakis left for the United States accompanied by his son, Kiriakos and his daughter, Katerina, while his daughter and ND parliament deputy Dora Bakoyiannis will depart for Phoenix on Monday. Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to return to Greece on June 3.

    [07] GREEK-ROMANIAN MILITARY COOPERATION

    The Greek and Romanian Undersecretaries of Defense signed an agreement in Athens for a five-year bilateral military cooperation.

    The agreement provides for the exchange of views on defense policy and security issues, and defense technology and cooperation in the sector of personnel training.

    A Greek-Romanian military committee has undertaken to materialize the agreement and will meet annually in Greece and Romania by turns. The first agreement between the two countries was signed in 1995.
