  • [01] FORTY TWO GREEK CLOTHING-TEXTILE COMPANIES AMONG THE WORLD'S TOP

    Forty two Greek companies from the sectors of clothing and textiles are among the 1.355 largest companies in 44 developed and certain developing countries, based on figures of the year 2000. The figures were included in the annual report conducted by the Clothing-Textile European Association, EURATEX.

    The report concerns 532 companies from the sector of clothing and 823 from the sector of textiles. The total turnover of the clothing companies included in the report was 152.65 billion Euro (287 million Euro per company on the average), while the turnover of the 823 textile companies was 184.54 billion Euro (225 million Euro per company on the average).

    [02] THE MOVEMENT OF FREE CITIZENS WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

    Movement of Free Citizens President Dimitris Avramopoulos stated that his party will not participate in the municipal elections, stressing that its goal is the next parliamentary elections. He also clarified that his party calls on its members to vote for the most able candidates in the municipal elections.

    Mr. Avramopoulos admitted that his party has economic problems and stressed that this is the result of the fact that its economic resources are transparent and has no economic dependencies.

    [03] ND LEADS PASOK BY 6.9%

    An opinion poll conducted by the polling company Taylor Nelson Sofres Metrisis recorded the intentions of the voters for the next parliamentary elections.

    A 38.7% of the voters responded that they intend to vote for the right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy compared to 30.9%, who responded that they will vote for the governing Socialist Party of PASOK, giving a lead of 6.9% to New Democracy.

    According to the poll, 7% of those asked responded that they will vote for the Greek Communist Party, Coalition of the Left got 5.8%, Movement of Free Citizens 3.8% and Democratic Social Movement 2.4%.

    Also, 38.7% responded that a New Democracy government can promote the solution of the problems in a better way, compared to 31.5% who backed PASOK. ND leader Kostas Karamanlis has the support of 26.3% of the voters who believe that he can solve the problems faced by the country, compared to 21.3% who backed Prime Minister Kostas Simitis.

    To the question center-right or center-left the voters support the center-right, as 22% believe that the country follows this direction, 23.4% want the country to turn toward this direction and 25.1% believe that the center-right will be the next election winner.

    [04] DORA BAKOYIANNI LEADS IN THE BATTLE FOR THE CITY OF ATHENS

    Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy candidate Ms. Dora Bakoyianni has an eight percentage point lead in the pre-election race for the post of the mayor of Athens. However, she cannot secure her election in the first round of the elections, according to a poll conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres Metrisis polling company.

    Based on the poll conducted on behalf of the Athens newspaper Saturday Ependitis in the period of April 18-24, Ms. Bakoyianni has the support of 31.4% of the voters compared to governing Socialist Party of PASOK candidate Christos Papoutsis, who got 23.7%.

    [05] PRESIDENT CLERIDES WILL BE IN ATHENS ON WEDNESDAY

    Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides will be in Athens on Wednesday in a climate of pessimism concerning the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    Meanwhile, an effort is being made by certain European circles to associate the issue of Cyprus' EU accession with a change of the Greek position concerning the Euro-army. Athens believes that the only way to defend the Greek positions is to exercise its veto powers.

    [06] THE PRIME MINISTER WILL BRIEF THE POLITICAL PARTY LEADERS

    Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will have separate meetings with the political party leaders next Friday, May 24 to brief them on the course of the issues of national importance.

    In statements he made after the governmental committee meeting last Thursday, the Prime Minister expressed the belief that the national issues are at a turning point underlining that there is a need for national unity. The Prime Minister will also brief President Kostis Stephanopoulos.
