[02] SKARAMAGAS AGREEMENT SOON TO BE SIGNED

    Athens, 6 May 2002 (18:36 UTC+2)

The final agreement on the Skramagas Shipyards sale to the HDW-Ferostaal joint venture will be singed on May 13, according to Minister of Development, Akis Tsohatzopoulos.

The date for the final signing of the agreement was set at a meeting between Ministers of Economy and Finance Nikos Christodoulakis and Development Akis Tsohatzopoulos with representatives of the buyers, who discussed the progress of the shipyards' privatization process, after the approval of the European Competition Committee.

[03] K. SIMITIS: NO TO EARLY ELECTIONS

    Athens, 6 May 2002 (18:31 UTC+2)

Scenarios concerning early elections were refuted by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in statements he made in Rhodes.

He characterized them as futile hopes of certain individuals, and observed that no serious country would hold elections at a time when it is being called to make serious decisions on important issues. He asked for the introversion to cease, for people to stop concerning themselves with small political and party issues, instead of looking in the direction Greece is moving in.

The Prime Minister warned Turkey that it should comply with EU suggestions in order to achieve accession, while he expressed his certainty concerning Cyprus' accession to the EU, despite any problems created by Ankara.
