  • [01] MEN ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIRS

    Thessaloniki, 20 April 2002 (17:35 UTC+2)

Men are more susceptible to extramarital affairs, according to a research on marriage in the Greek society that was conducted by Macedonia University in Thessaloniki.

According to the research that was made on a sample of 150 people, the majority of those who saw cheating in marriage in a positive way were men (65.1%) compared to women (34.9%). However, the majority of those who answered the questionnaire stated they would not try to have extramarital affairs.

To the question how would you react to your spouse's infidelity, 44% responded that they would break up the relationship, 40% stated that they would forgive the infidelity and give a second chance, while 16% stated that they would be unfaithful too.

Based on the research, 65% are in favor of marriage, while one in three, namely 31%, do not believe in marriage as an institution. Also, 69% see positively the likelihood of a second marriage in case of a failure in the first one.

The overwhelming majority (89.7%) is in favor of a church marriage, while 67% are against the legalization of marriage between homosexuals.

[02] MARGINAL DROP OF INFLATION IN APRIL

    Athens, 20 April 2002 (17:27 UTC+2)

The economic staff of the Greek government expects marginal drop of inflation in the month of April compared to last year after the shock it suffered in March when the price index skyrocketed to 4%.

The drop of inflation will be due to the fact that the Christian Orthodox Easter will be celebrated in May this year and not in April like last year.

However, the fresh fruits and vegetables reevaluation coupled with the fuel reevaluation recorded in April could limit the favorable effect of the above mentioned circumstances and as a result the drop of inflation could be marginal.

[03] THE PRIME MINISTER'S MESSAGE ON THE 1967 COUP

    Athens, 20 April 2002 (18:02 UTC+2)

Democracy today is not in any danger by a military coup or a constitutional deviation. However, democracy is in danger by the reappearance of a pathological climate coupled with institutional degeneration phenomena, corruption, defamation and depreciation of politics, stressed Greek prime Minister Kostas Simitis in his message on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the April 21st, 1967 military coup.

The Prime Minister assured that the government will continue to upgrade the quality of democracy until the end of its term in power, while it will also upgrade institutional reforms for more clarity in political party funding. In addition, measures will be taken against corruption and efforts will continue for administrative reform, regional reconstruction and decentralization.

    [04] SIMITIS-GADAFFI TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION

    Athens, 20 April 2002 (17:23 UTC+2)

Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis had a telephone communication with Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi to discuss the Euro-conference that opens on Monday on the Middle East issue.

The Arab world is alarmed by the latest developments in the Middle East, Israel's continuing war tactic and the failure of the recent US diplomatic initiative, while there is fertile ground for European Union mediation.

[05] PAPANDREOU-CEM IN THE MIDDLE EAST NEXT WEEK

    Athens, 20 April 2002 (17:21 UTC+2)

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem will be in the Middle East next week within the framework of the initiative they have undertaken for the promotion of the peace process in the region.

Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Panos Beglitis maintained that if circumstances allow for it the two men will contribute to the efforts to lift the deadlock and assist in the resumption of the peace process.
