  • [01] ARCHBISHOP OF ALBANIA IN GREECE

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (10:28 UTC+2)

The Archbishop of Tirana and all of Albania, Anastasios is making his first official visit to the Church of Greece. The visit had originally been scheduled for last year but was canceled due to the heightening of confrontations on the ID issue.

Islam and Christianity is the topic of the Archbishop's speech at the Athens Academy. He will also meet with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, at which meetings he is expected to be accompanied by Archbishop Christodoulos. Also, at his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, G. Papandreou, he is expected to discuss the preparations of the inter-religious conference being organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ecumenical Patriarchy.

[02] LALIOTIS ATTACK ON ND ABOUT LIBERIAN COMPANY

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (20:52 UTC+2)

A new episode has begun in the confrontation between the secretary of PASOK's Central Committee, Kostas Laliotis, and New Democracy and its honorary President, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, on the Liberian company "Mayo Investments Corporation".

Mr. Laliotis sent a file to the media with evidence that has been published in the press, which, as he says, prove the relationship between New Democracy and the Liberian company.

In this file it is mentioned that Aristidis Alafouzos deposited $600.000 in 1989, which ended up in the treasury of New Democracy. According to Mr. Laliotis, the supplier account of then President of the party, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, is in the Royal bank of Scotland, and through this, turned into drachmas by Ethniki bank, the dollars found their way to New Democracy.

Mr. Laliotis asked for a written statement to open the supplier account, and for light to be shed on the evidence that the $600.000 are indeed in the accounts of New Democracy.

He also mentioned that if this supplier account opens, the dirty money being trafficked for New Democracy by the Liberian company will become public.

    [03] CONTROL OF «VARYAG» REGAINED

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (20:23 UTC+2)

Control was regained over the course of the aircraft carrier "Varyag", which was sailing towards the southeastern shores of Evia, out of control.

    [04] ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN KOS

    Kos, 4 November 2001 (20:22 UTC+2)

15 illegal immigrants (12 men and 3 women) were arrested this morning on Kos, by the island's authorities. 9 of the illegal immigrants were from Sierra Leone, 3 from the Congo, 1 from Sudan, 1 from Togo and 1 from Liberia, who used a wooden fishing boat to get to shore.

    [05] «LETS NOT TURN BIN LADEN INTO A HERO»

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (19:56 UTC+2)

Attention was drawn to the danger of young Muslims identifying with bin Laden, by Peter Marsden, writer and researcher, specialized on Afghanistan and Central Asia, who was invited to Athens by the Institute of International Financial Relations.

"I believe that young people identify with bin Laden, he is like a hero to them. The danger exists, that the longer operations in Afghanistan take, the harder it is for the governments of countries such as Egypt or Saudi Arabia to hold the same position. The key issue of American or Western policy is to aim at the moderate public opinion of the Muslim world. The danger is that it may be radicalized after all that is happening".

    [06] SYMPOSIUM ON «EUROPE AND NEW HELLENISM»

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (19:40 UTC+2)

"Europe and new Hellenism" is the topic of the scientific symposium organized by the Association of Modern Greek Cultural Studies and General Education of the Moraitis School on Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10.

On the first day of the symposium, the speakers are: S. Kontaratos, "Anti-European trends in the creation of a new Hellenic identity: notes on the critical consideration of a historic phenomenon", V. Tsinorema, "Hellenism and European innovation a critique on technocratic and communal ideologies of cultural disharmony and a comment", S. Asdrachas, "Europe and new Hellenism:Things self-evident", A. Giagou, "Greece's participation in London's Great International Fair of 1851" and P. Kitromilidis, "Western sources of Anti-Western arguments in Greek Education".

[07] CHINESE AIRCRAFT CARRIER CREW SAFE

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (18:28 UTC+2)

The 7 members - 3 Russians,3 Ukrainians and 1 Philippino - of the "Varyag" aircraft carrier, sailing under a Chinese flag, were rescued this morning by a "Super Puma" helicopter. The ship itself is still sailing rudderless 17 miles off the shore of the isle of Skyros.

The aircraft carrier, traveling to China towed by three tugboats, without its engines and equipment, had entered the Aegean after having crossed the Black Sea, when the lines tied to it broke due to the fretful winds blowing in the Aegean.

    [08] G. PAPANDREOU ON SUCCESSION

    Thessaloniki, 4 November 2001 (18:28 UTC+2)

The issue of succession in PASOK, has nothing to do with the situation today, stressed Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Papandreou, in an interview to the "Typos tis Kyriakis" newspaper, and noted: "There is a Prime Minister, there is a President of PASOK, who was elected at the Congress recently, there is a specific program and all of us support the President and the program".

As far as he is concerned, he pointed out that the trust people have placed in him, creates an even greater sense of responsibility and demand from himself, while when there is an issue of succession, he considers that the solution which will be given at that time, will express the President's opinion and the party mechanism, as well as the peoples' feeling.

[09] LETTER TO US EMBASSY DID NOT HAVE ANTHRAX

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (18:28 UTC+2)

The two latest samples of nasal excretions - according to the test results of the Microbiological Lab of Athens University - which the US Embassy sent to the Center of Special Viruses Control(KEEL), were tested negative.

Theses two samples were sent to the KEEL in the framework of the epidimiological check, performed on Embassy facilities and staff members.

It should be noted that the US Embassy has sent another 25 samples to the KEEL over the last week, all of which tested negative.

[10] M. THEODORAKIS: THE US ARE A MODERN DEMON

    Thessaloniki, 4 November 2001 (18:28 UTC+2)

The characteristics of a modern demon are seen by Mikis Theodorakis, who is against the bombing of civilians in Afghanistan, and in an interview to the "Kathimerini" newspaper he underlines: "The US, not as a nation, of course, but as a dogma professed, served and propagandized by the ruling powers, are undisputedly a modern "demon". Because they are turning our world into an endless jungle".

"They had to let off steam on someone, and they finally have", he noted on the bombings, and added: "Is this collection of so many bodies, of so humble an identity, worthy of the myth of the only superpower? Do these gaunt hungry bodies deserve the lust of a colossus' revenge, after their dark skin has been inflicted with the cruelty of the Taliban, destined to become select targets, new victims of those who have traveled more than 30.000 miles from their country, to supposedly punish the Taliban? I hope that as time passes and the rage of the Americans subsides, they will start to see more clearly, more rationally... Besides, they have shown it with their reaction to Vietnam. The problem is, when will the rest of us start reacting calmly, rationally and, most importantly of all, justly".

On Osama bin Laden he explained that "the, at times, various bin Ladens are nothing more than the poisonous antibodies created by the abnormal shaping of conditions and rules of life for billions of people, under the "demonic" ruling of the powerful, for whom injustice, is their one and only 'virtue'".

He pointed out that during the dictatorship in Greece, the US had allied themselves with the dictatorial regime, which was a terrorist regime, and did so in other cases as well. "Our difference is that we never allugned ourselves with terrorists, and everywhere and always condemn terrorism in all its forms".

[11] SERMON OF LOVE BY ANASTASIOS

    Athens, 4 November 2001 (18:28 UTC+2)

"All nations were molded by the same Creator. No nation, regardless of how religious it is, has exclusiveness to God's love", underlined the Archbishop of Tirana and the whole of Albania, Anastasios.

"The Church's duty", he continued, "will always be to be the carrier of truth and life following Christ, never aggressively disposed, as may be in other religious systems". That is why, he stressed "we Christians must never be seduced by the opponent's method, aggression and vengefulness, but owe to always be factors of Justice".

    [12] GREEK SCIENTISTS AGAINST ANTHRAX

    Vienna, 4 November 2001 (20:07 UTC+2)

Two Greek scientists in a microbiological lab in Grats, Austria, are attempting to find an antidote to the bacillus of anthrax: They put 20 million anthrax spores into two envelopes, and spray one with a chemical substance used by petrol companies for the neutralization of microbes that clog drilling piping.

Last weekend they discovered that the effective substance, which they have named Geo 1, has a chance to destroy anthrax spores.

"Some experiments are still necessary, before we are completely certain", mentioned the head of the scientific team, Professor of Microbiology at the University Hospital of Vienna, Apostolos Georgopoulos, in an interview to the "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia".
