  • [01] EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 5.7 IN RHODES

    Athens, 23 June 2001 (17:38 UTC+2)

    A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes at 9.52am today.

    According to the Geophysics Institute in Athens, the earthquake's epicenter was located at the sea region 60 kilometers south of the island.

    The tremor was especially felt in the islands of Rhodes, Kastelorizo, Karpathos and Crete. No injuries or damages were reported and seismologists are not alarmed.

    According to seismologist Nikos Melis, the seismic activity in the region is being monitored, adding that an earthquake of this magnitude is a usual phenomenon in the region.

    [02] LATSIS-HATZIIOANNOU-KOKKALIS ON FORBES' GOLDEN LIST

    Three Greek businessmen namely, Spiros Latsis, Stelios Hatziioannou and Socratis Kokkalis are included in this year's list with the 538 tycoons of the world economy drawn up by the US economic magazine FORBES.

    The list will be published next week and according to it, banker Spiros Latsis, of the known family of ship-owners, ranks 79th on the list with a fortune of US$4.6 billion. Stelios Hatziioannou, the 34-year-old founder of the EasyJet airline, is at the 336th place with a fortune of US$1.5 billion and businessman Socratis Kokkalis is 421st with a fortune of US$ 1.2 billion.

    American tycoon Bill Gates, the founder of MICROSOFT, tops the list with a fortune of US$ 58.7 billion

    The combined fortune of the richest people in the world is US$ 1.7 trillion and it is 15 times larger than the Greek GDP.

    [03] PAPANDREOU-CEM MEETING IN SAMOS

    Two-day Greek-Turkish talks, aimed at the promotion of exchanges at both sides of the Aegean, will take place today and tomorrow between Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem in the twinned municipalities of the Greek Aegean island of Samos and Kusadasi at the Asia Minor coasts in Turkey.

    Mr. Cem arrived in Samos accompanied by his wife and son and Turkish officials and they were welcome by Mr. Papandreou, his wife and daughter, Aegean minister Mr. Sifounakis, parliament deputies and local officials.

    Mr. Cem stated that himself and Mr. Papandreou do all they can, referring to the Greek-Turkish relations, adding that the two peoples must develop closer ties.

    Mr. Papandreou agreed with his Turkish counterpart and said that the local administration's assistance is needed for the promotion of friendship between the two peoples.

    The second stop of their tour tomorrow will be the Turkish coasts, Kusadasi, and a visit to the archaeological Museum in Efesus.

    The goal of the meeting is to strengthen the trade, economic, cultural, and tourist exchanges at both sides of the Aegean.

    [04] GREECE AMONG THE 30 STRONGEST ECONOMIES IN THE WORLD

    The US magazine "World Trade" places Greece among the "G-30" of the world economy in terms of competitiveness, US investments and economic expansion.

    The fact that Greece had its first surplus budget in two decades in combination with the government efforts for the improvement of the Greek economy's international competitiveness, were able to bring the Greek economy to the 27th place this year compared to the 39th place it occupied in 2000.

    The US magazine conducts for a third year in a row the research on "trade and economic expansion" taking under consideration a wide range of factors covering different aspects of the international competitiveness of an economy, according to an article published today on the Athens newspaper "Imerisia".

    [05] A CYPRUS AIRWAYS PLANE WAS FORCED TO LAND BY A DRUNK BRITISH PASSENGER

    Thessaloniki, 23 June 2001 (15:13 UTC+2)

    A 27-year-old British man caused trouble for the passengers of a Cyprus Airways plane.

    After consuming a large quantity of alcohol drinks during a flight from London he hassled the passengers and scuffled with the flight attendants. The pilot had to make an emergency landing at Thessaloniki's Macedonia Airport and the British man was arrested.

    The plane was on route from London to Larnaca, Cyprus.
