[02] GREEK PM SIMITIS TO MEET WITH FRENCH COUNTERPART THIS MONTHAthens, August 3 (MPA)Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is to meet with his French counterpart Lionel Jospin on an Aegean island during their holidays in August, according to press reports.As the Reuters news agency reported, Mr. Jospin will be spending his holiday on Antiparos, one of the Cyclades islands, where Mr. Simitis would join him for a private meeting. [03] GREEK INTRN/NAL LAW PROFESSOR IS VP OF EUROPEAN HUMAN RIGHTS COURTAthens, August 3 (MPA)International law professor Christos Rozakis has been elected to the post of vice-president of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).Foreign Undersecretary Yiannos Kranidiotis expressed the government's satisfaction over the election of Mr. Rozakis who served briefly as foreign undersecretary in the Simitis government from September 1996 to January 1997. He was elected an ECHR judge in January. [04] DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER TO MEET WITH US AMBASSADORAthens, August 3 (MPA)Diplomatic mobility is intensified as the date of arrival of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Cyprus nears.Greece's deputy Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis is to meet with the United States Ambassador to Athens Nicholas Burns today and re expected to discuss the missiles issue. Meanwhile, Cyprus's Defense Minister Yiannakis Omirou stated that the island, as a sovereign country, is being militarily outfitted on the premise of its defense needs. [05] MAJORITY OF GREEKS DO NOT WANT THE US' MEDIATION, ACCORDING TO POLLThessaloniki, August 3 (MPA)The majority of Greek citizens are against the mediation of the United States in Greek-Turkish relations, according to the results of a recently-conducted poll, published today in the Greek daily 'Ta Nea'.The poll, performed by the V-PRC agency, revealed that 52% of those questioned said no to US involvement, while 63.4% is in favor of the European Union's involvement, with 66,2% favoring recourse to the International Court of Justice at the Hague and 37,3% wanting direct dialogue with Ankara. Public opinion appears divided on the possibility of a 'hot incident' taking place in the Aegean or Cyprus, with 45 % seeming it a likely occurrence. In the case of a military showdown between Greece and Turkey, 48,2% believe that Athens will prevail, 11.4% think that Turkey will win, while 23.6% believe that there is military balance between the two neighbors. [06] TRAIN LINE TO RE-OPEN THIS EVENINGThessaloniki, August 3 (MPA)The main train line running from Thessaloniki to Europe is to be re-opened this evening, according to the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE).A section of the track was closed on Friday after a train carrying crude oil to Skopje was derailed. Passengers traveling to Europe on the important route where diverted around the problem area by buses provided by OSE. [07] CONFLICT CONTINUES IN KOSSOVOPrishtina, August 3 (MPA)Conflict continues in Kossovo among the Serb forces and the Albanian-speaking residents in the province's central and western region. The capital city of Prishina has become inaccessible by car from the city of Pec.Moreover, the ongoing violence at the city of Malisevo has rendered impossible the delivery of humanitarian aid to the thousands of refugees who have fled to the nearby region.
