    [01] MOURNING FOR THE 4 VICTIMS OF IMITTOS FIRE NEAR ATHENS

    Athens 23 July (MPA)

    An investigation has been ordered by the leadership of the Fire Fighting Department to determine what caused the tragedy in Imittos near Athens that resulted in 4 people dead and a number of injuries.

    The victims are three fire-fighters and an unidentified individual. The news of the death of one of the fire-fighters had as a result his mother-in-law to suffer a heart attack and die, while his mother is hospitalized suffering a stroke.

    Grief for the loss of the four was expressed by president of the republic Kostis Stephanopoulos, prime minister Kostas Simitis, all the political party leaders and Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece.

    [02] THE GRADES FOR THE UNIVERSITY ADMISSION EXAMS WILL BE POSTED UP TODAY

    Athens 23 July (MPA)

    The lists with the grades for the university admission exams will be posted up at noon today in all the high schools that were examination centers. According to the latest evaluations by the ministry of education, the grades’ average will drop. Meanwhile, issues concerning the reform in the education system and the preparation for the new school year were discussed by prime minister Kostas Simitis and minister of education Gerasimos Arsenis.

    [03] 24HOUR STRIKE CALLED BY THE GREEK GENERAL CONFEDERATION OF LABOR

    Thessaloniki 23 July (MPA)

    Problems in public transportation and in bank transactions were the result of the 24hour strike called by the Greek General Confederation of Labor. The strikers protest against the new draft bill on work relations which will be presented in Parliament within the following days and they demand the adoption of a 35hour week. Protest demonstrations are being held in Thessaloniki, Athens and other big cities.

    [04] THE ARMED CLASHES CONTINUE IN KOSOVO

    Belgrade 23 July (MPA)

    The armed clashes continue at the outskirts of Orahovac in the Serb province of Kosovo. Meanwhile, the OSCE observers, who visited the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, stated that their talks with the Serb government were fruitless. The Yugoslav officials have rejected the OSCE request for the presence of permanent observers in Kosovo.

    [05] MR. KRANIDIOTIS IS ON A VISIT TO MONGOLIA

    Ulan Bator 23 July (MPA)

    Greek undersecretary of foreign affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis, who is the first Greek government minister visiting Mongolia, met with the foreign minister of the country and his Mongolian counterpart.

    In the meeting it was decided that the procedures for an agreement of cooperation in the sectors of economy, trade and know- how should be in effect, while the existing education agreement should expand.

    Mr. Kranidiotis pointed out that Greece firmly backs the strengthening of the relations between the EU and Mongolia, while he called on the government of Mongolia to submit proposals for development programs.

    Greece has diplomatic relations with Mongolia since 1967 which are being carried out through the Greek embassy in South Korea.

    [06] AUSTRIA IS ANNOYED BY THE GERMAN TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR CYPRUS

    Vienna 23 July (MPA)

    The Austrian foreign ministry regards as excessive measure the German travel advisory for Cyprus which was recently issued by Bonn warning the German nationals against traveling to Cyprus in the fall.

    It appears that the Austrian EU presidency does not share Bonn’s concerns and maintains that this action will not contribute to the easing of the tension in the region and the solution of the Cyprus problem, while it is possible to slow down the EU enlargement process.

    According to the BBC, the Austrian foreign ministry does not intend to issue a similar advisory as according to its spokesman, it does not believe that there is a specific reason for such a decision.

    [07] THE TURKISH PRESIDENT WILL VISIT THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES IN CYPRUS

    Nicosia 23 July (MPA)

    Turkish president Suleiman Demirel will visit the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus on Saturday and he will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Meanwhile, Turkish government ministers and 5 Parliament deputies from different political parties are expected to arrive in the Turkish occupied territories in Cyprus.

    [08] CLERIDES: THE AIR SPACE OF CYPRUS IS CONSTANTLY VIOLATED BY TURKISH JETS

    Nicosia 23 July (MPA)

    The Cypriot air space is constantly violated by Turkish jets, stressed Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides responding to the statement made by US State Department spokesman James Rubin according to which, no Turkish fighter jet flew over the island on the day of the black anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20.

    The Cypriot president underlined that it can not be used as an excuse the fact that the aircraft participated in an air show, stressing that anything that enters the air space of the country without the permission of the government violates the air space.

    Mr. Clerides, commenting on the statement made by Hellenic Republic President Kostis Stephanopoulos that an aggressive action against Cyprus would constitute a cause of war for Greece, stated that he was not surprised by the statement as president Stephanopoulos has repeatedly expressed this view in the past.

    [09] THE DRAFT BILL ON WORK RELATIONS WAS INTRODUCED IN PARLIAMENT

    Athens 23 July (MPA)

    The draft bill on work relations has been introduced in Parliament and minister of labor Miltiadis Papaioannou has described it as the product of a new balance between the flexibility of the work market and the security of the workers. Mr. Papaioannou confirmed that all unemployed under the age of 29 will have free medical care starting on January 1, 1999.

    [10] US ENVOY THOMAS MILLER IS ON A VISIT TO NICOSIA

    Nicosia 23 July (MPA)

    US State Department coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Miller is in Nicosia today for talks aimed at the resumption of the dialogue between the two communities on the island. According to an interview with the Athens newspaper “Kathimerini”, Mr. Miller will present certain new ideas to the interested parties aimed at defusing the tension and cancel the installation of the Russian S- 300 anti-aircraft missiles. Meanwhile, British envoy Sir David Hanney called on the Clerides government to reconsider the purchase of the Russian S-300 anti- aircraft missiles. The British diplomat stated that the purchase of the missiles will worsen the climate in the relations of the two communities in Cyprus.

    [11] GORAN BREGOVIC WILL BE IN SIVIRI, CHALKIDIKI ON SATURDAY

    Thessaloniki 23 July (MPA)

    Goran Bregovic will perform at the amphitheater of Siviri in Chalkidiki, northern Greece on Saturday evening within the framework of the Festival of Kassandra.

    Bregovic will be accompanied by a 27member gypsy orchestra and a 13member choir as well as, 4 popular Bulgarian singers and is expected to capture the audience with his music. The concert will last 2,5 hours and will include not only Bregovic’s film music but certain of his songs that have been performed in Greek by popular Greek singers Giorgos Dalaras and Alkistis Protopsalti.
