NEWS IN DETAIL[01] THE PANGALOS VISIT TO TIRANA IS BEING COMPLETEDTirana 21 July (MPA)Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos completes his visit to Tirana today. In the talks he had with the Albanian political leadership reiterated Greece’s intention to undertake an initiative for the solution of the problem in Kosovo. At the same time, he stated that the Greek government can not accept acts of violence by any side as “violence brings more violence”. Mr. Pangalos was about to meet today with the political leaders of the ethic Albanians in Kosovo within the framework of the Greek initiative aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the crisis. From their side, both Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano and foreign minister Paskal Milo called on Greece to use its influence on Belgrade within the framework of the traditionally friendly relations between Athens and Belgrade in order to stop the Serb attacks against the unarmed ethnic Albanians. According to Mr. Pangalos, the hostilities must end and the people of Kosovo must express their united political will. Mr. Pangalos blamed for the crisis Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic and the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army. It should be noted, that the Greek foreign minister is accompanied by 11 businessmen active in Albania, who had valuable meetings and collaborations with government officials in Tirana aimed at improving the economic cooperation between the two countries.[02] SIMITIS-MATIES MEETING IN ATHENS ON THURSDAYAthens 21 July (MPA)EU Commissioner Monica Vulf-Maties, who will be in Athens on Thursday, will meet with prime minister Kostas Simitis.The EU Commissioner will also have contacts with minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou, undersecretary Christos Pachtas and deputy foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou. Their talks will focus on the EU Commission proposals on the new regulations that will be implemented within the framework of the agenda 2000. [03] INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INCREASED BY 5.6% IN MAYAthens 21 July (MPA)Industrial production in Greece increased by 5.6% in the month of May, according to data issued by the National Statistics Agency. Specifically, the general production index in the sectors of mines, industry and electricity-natural gas, increased in May by 7.5%. The output index of mine production increased by 1.3%, while most impressive was the course of the electricity-natural gas production index which increased by 26.5%.[04] UNEMPLOYMENT WAS AT A RECORD HIGH IN JUNEAthens 21 July (MPA)Over 1.720 people were fired daily in Greece in the past month, bringing the unemployment rate to a record high. At the same time, 1 out of 3 people, who looked for a job in the first six months of 1998, were unsuccessful.The registered unemployed corresponded to 9.8% of the work force in the month of June, compared to 6.84% during the same period last year, which is an increase of 2.86 percentage points. Specifically, according to official statistical data issued by the labor ministry, the layoffs were 43.097 in June compared to 31.705 in June last year. Most of the firings were recorded in the region of Athens (19.480) followed by northern Greece (12.508) and southern Greece (2.655). [05] THE GRADES FOR THE UNIVERSITY ADMISSION EXAMS WILL BE OUT BY THE END OF THE WEEKAthens 21 July (MPA)The lists with the grades of the university admission exams will be out at the end of the week. According to the responsible ministry of education agency, the processing of the grades is expected to be completed today.[06] THE FIGHTING IN KOSOVO CONTINUESBelgrade 21 July (MPA)The clashes in Kosovo continue and about 100 people have been killed in the past few days. Meanwhile, the Serb forces are in control of the town of Orahovac, while the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army seeks to move the armed clashes to the urban centers.[07] PRIME MINISTER SIMITIS WILL MEET WITH THE CHIEF OF THE NATIONAL GUARD OF CYPRUSAthens 21 July (MPA)National Guard of Cyprus chief lieutenant-general Dimitris Dimou will meet with Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis in Athens tomorrow. It is the first time that the chief of the National Guard meets with the Greek prime minister.Mr. Dimou is expected to brief Mr. Simitis on all the issues that concern Cyprus’ defense and the operational capabilities of the National Guard in relation to the Joint Defense Doctrine. [08] CLERIDES - HANNEY MEETING IN NICOSIANicosia 21 July (MPA)Britain’s special envoy to Cyprus and Austrian EU presidency representative Sir David Hanney met with Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides in Nicosia today.The two men discussed issues concerning the Cyprus problem, the deadlock in the talks on the future of the island, Cyprus’s EU accession course and security issues. Mr. Hanney, who was accompanied by Austrian foreign ministry representative Volter Hagg, characterized the meeting as “very useful”. [09] THE NEW YORK GOVERNOR: CYPRUS HAS THE RIGHT TO DEFEND ITSELFNicosia 21 July (MPA)New York governor George Pattakis backed Cyprus’s right to defend itself, pointing out that the US government should pressure Ankara in order for the Greek Cypriots to be allowed to return to their homes in the northern part of the island which continues to be under Turkish occupation.In an interview with the New York Greek-American radio station “Antenna FM”, Mr. Pattakis stated that the government of Cyprus has the right to defense and that Washington should not tell Cyprus not to defend itself but it should call on Turkey to open the borders in Cyprus in order for the Greeks to be able to return to their homes in the occupied northern part of the island. He also pointed out that this should be the political position of the US government internationally. The New York governor criticized the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the continuing occupation of the northern part of the island. [10] INTENSIVE GREEK LANGUAGE COURSES FOR 110 YOUNG STUDENTS OF GREEK ORIGIN AND FOREIGNERSThessaloniki 21 July (MPA)Intensive Greek language courses will be offered to 110 students of Greek origin as well as to foreigners coming from 12 European countries. The courses will be offered within the framework of the monthly program materialized by a Macedonia University special committee. The program is financed by the ministry of education and is directed to students aged 15-25.Those participating in the program will have the opportunity to visit monuments and museums, enjoy the sea, attend cultural events and visit Athens where they will meet with minister of education Gerasimos Arsenis. [11] THREE EXPLOSIONS ROCKED FYROM TODAYSkopje 21 July (MPA)Three explosions rocked FYROM this morning without causing any deaths or injuries. According to unofficial information, the first explosion occurred at the center of FYROM’s capital of Skopje, near the “Prosvetno Delo” bookstore. The second explosion was recorded in the town of Kumanovo, 25 kilometers north-west of Skopje. The third explosive device blew up at the Belgrade-Skopje railway lines near the Yugoslav borders. According to the Skopje radio station, the blast damaged the Bucharest-Athens train. The common element of the three explosions was that all of them occurred at the same time at 2:50 am this morning.[12] SIMITIS - TSOCHATZOPOULOS MEETINGAthens 21 July (MPA)PASOK’s party issues and the imminent local administration elections were the subject of today’s talks in the meeting of prime minister Kostas Simitis with party general secretary Kostas Skandalidis. The armaments program of the Greek armed forces will be discussed by the prime minister and minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos in the meeting they will have this afternoon in view of the Governmental Council of National Defense on Friday.[13] ND DEPUTIES GIAKOUMATOS AND GIOVANOUDAS WILL APPEAR BEFORE THE ETHICS COUNCILAthens 21 July (MPA)The right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy Parliament deputies Gerasimos Giakoumatos and Varsamis Giovanoudas will appear before the political party’s Council of Ethics to speak in their defense. If the explanations they will give will not be found satisfactory they will be called to appear before the party’s Disciplinary Council. As a result of the behavior of the two Parliament members in question, a group of ND party deputies intend to resubmit a proposal for the amendment of the parliamentary immunity article in the Constitution.[14] NATO WARNS IT WILL INTERVENE IN KOSOVOBrussels 21 July (MPA)NATO reiterated its warning that it will intervene militarily in Kosovo after the bloody incidents of the past few days in the region which continue in the town of Orahovac. According to information, 25.000 people have left the town. Washington blames Belgrade for the developments while at the same time, the Serb side maintains that the Albanian separatists in Kosovo are being backed by Muslim Mudjahedin rebels.[15] THE APPROACH RADAR WILL BE INSTALLED IN MACEDONIA AIRPORT EARLY NEXT MONTHThessaloniki 21 July (MPA)The first tests on the new approach radar of Thessaloniki’s Macedonia Airport will be made in early next month. According to airport officials, special technicians of the Italian company “Alenia”, that will undertake the whole project, will be in Thessaloniki in the first 10 days of August. According to the newspaper “Thessaloniki”, the construction work on the site where the radar will be installed proceeds as scheduled based on the Greek Civil Aviation Agency timetable.[16] RUSSIA WANTS TO SUPPLY GREECE WITH S-300 MISSILESMoscow 21 July (MPA)Russia intends to supply Greece with S-300 weapons systems, according to the Russian news agency Itar-Tass.According to a statement made to Itar-Tass by an official of the Russian defense industry, Moscow wants to supply Athens with missile systems that include a C-300PMU2 Favorit and an Antei- 2500. [17] PANGALOS VISITED THE GREEK FORCE IN ALBANIATirana 21 July (MPA)A number of bullet-proof vests, military uniforms etc destined for the rapid intervention force in the city of Vlore, were delivered to the Izberis Army camp in the presence of Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos and Albanian minister of public order Perikli Teta, within the framework of the Albanian police reinforcement with the help of the Greek ministry of public order.The Greek delegation in Albania also visited the Church’s Diagnostic Medical Center and the Arsakio School which according to a statement made by foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos will open in September.
