    [01] BAD WEATHER STRIKES GREECE, WORSE CONDITIONS FORECAST

    Thessaloniki, December 15 (MPA)

    Adverse weather has stricken Greece, with snow falling in western Macedonia and non-skid chains being required for most vehicles.

    According to the National Weather Bureau, the weather is expected to worsen today and the low temperatures are to last until Friday. So far, the snow levels in some areas of Florina and Kastoria have measured 15 cm. A.F.

    [02] TURKISH PM THREATENS TO ANNEX OCCUPIED TERRITORY OF CYPRUS

    Ankara, December 15 (MPA)

    Turkey’s Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz has threatened that if the negotiations for Cyprus’s accession to the European Union continue, then he will proceed to annex the island’s occupied part into Turkey. The threat came on the aftermath of Turkey’s isolation during the recently-held EU Summit in Luxembourg.

    Moreover, Mr. Yilmaz announced that his country will cease all political dialogue with the Community. The German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel characterized the Turkish reaction as “wrong and unjustified.” A.F.

    [03] GREEK PRESIDENT TRAVELS TO UKRAINE

    Athens, December 15 (MPA)

    The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos departed for Ukraine today, embarking on a three-day official tour.

    President Stephanopoulos, accompanied by the alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou, is to visit Kiev, Odessa and Marioupolis where he will meet with the country’s political leadership and members of the Greek community.

    Specifically, the Greek President is to be received today by his Ukrainian counterpart L. Kucma and Prime Minister V. Pustovoitenko

    During his stay, Mr. Stephanopoulos is expected to sign bilateral agreements with Ukrainian political leaders. It is reminded that during Mr. Kucma’s visit to Athens in November of 1996, the two sides had signed a Friendship Accord. A.F.

    [04] GREECE HOLDS ON STRONG AS FYROM’S THIRD LARGEST TRADE ALLY

    Thessaloniki, December 15 (MPA)

    Greece continues to hold on strong as FYROM’s third largest trade ally, according to data released for the time period between January and September.

    According to FYROM’s Statistics Agency, Greece ranks third among 20 trade allies, with its trade volume reaching $167,273, out of FYROM’s overall volume of $2,125,154.00, representing 7.9% of the trade transactions.

    The first place in trade with FYROM is held by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, 16.8%, followed by Germany, 14.2%. A.F.

    [05] PASOK DELEGATION VISITS TIRANA

    Tirana, December 15 (MPA)

    The recent visit conducted to Albania by a delegation of PASOK officials has been saluted by the Albanian press as indicative of the relations enjoyed between the two countries.

    PASOK’s Secretary of Political Affairs Theodoros Tsoukatos met with the President of Albania’s socialist Party Skender Gjinushi to whom he relayed the Greek government’s readiness to support Albania in the sectors of bilateral relations and relations with third countries.,

    Mr. Gjinushi, in turn, outlined the progress his country has recently marked and stated that Albanian is taking significant steps towards re-establishing its state institutions and the restoration of peace and stability.

    The Greek officials also met with Albanian Premier Fatos Nano who expressed his satisfaction and optimism in regards to the relations between the two socialist parties. A.F.
