    [01] THE SENIOR US OFFICIAL VISITING GREECE RAISED AN ISSUE OF TERRORISM

    Athens (MPA)

    A terrorism issue was raised today by US assistant Secretary of State responsible for European issues, Mark Grossman after the meeting he had with the leader of the main opposition party of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis.

    Mr.Grossman expressed the discontent of the US government “for the presence of two Kurdish terrorist organizations in Greece” and pointed out that the United States are studying the report published in the British newspaper “The Observer”, which mentions that Kurdish rebels are being trained in Greece and have close ties with the terrorist organization “17 November”.

    Regarding the Greek-Turkish relations, he speculated that the meeting of Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis with his Turkish counterpart Mesut Yilmaz in Crete will be a chance for progress.

    Meanwhile, Public Order Minister Giorgos Romeos is in Washington for contacts with US officials.

    [02] THE GREEK GOVERNMENT COMMENTED ON THE US STATE DEPARTMENT STATEMENTS

    The interest of the United States and their sensitivity regarding terrorism issues are reasonable, stated Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas when asked to comment on the statements of US State Department spokesman Jim Foley according to which, the US government takes under serious consideration the information published in the British newspaper “The Observer” on the alleged training of Kurdish rebels in Greece.

    The Greek government spokesman underlined the Greek government’s sensitivity regarding terrorism issues and reminded the bloody terrorist attack in Oklahoma, USA last year.

    Athens cooperates with all countries to counter terrorism which is not thriving only in Greece, stated mr.Reppas. When asked to comment on the statements made by US official Mark Grossman, regarding the presence of terrorist organizations in Greece, the government spokesman stated that Kurdish organizations are not found only in Greece but in the United States and other EU countries as well, underlining that in one of them the Kurds have established their own Parliament.

    In any case, said mr.Reppas, there must be cooperation so that the common target, which is to counter terrorism, will not be lost, adding that this will surely happen if one country puts the blame on the other.

    [03] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW IS IN XANTHI

    Thessaloniki 2 October (MPA)

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is visiting the north-eastern city of Xanthi today. His schedule includes a visit to the 4th Army Corps and also to Democrition University where he will be declared professor emeritus, while he will visit and the church of St.Sofia.

    The head of the Christian Orthodox Church will return to Thessaloniki this afternoon, and before leaving for Istanbul later this evening from Macedonia Airport, he will send a message to the Greek people.

    [04] PANGALOS - GROSSMAN MEETING

    Athens 2 October (MPA)

    The Greek-Turkish relations were discussed yesterday evening in the meeting of Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos with US assistant Secretary of State mr.Grossman, who is visiting Greece. Today, the US official will meet with alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou.

    Mr.Grossman is also scheduled to visit Nicosia and Ankara. Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stressed that there is no change in the foreign policy in relation to the Greek-Turkish relations.

    [05] THE TAXES ON LARGE REAL ESTATE WILL BE PAID IN 1997

    Athens 2 October (MPA)

    The taxes imposed on large real estate will be paid in 1997 and in one instalment instead of three, as it was announced today by Undersecretary of Finance Giorgos Dris.

    Meanwhile according to press information, the government examines the likelihood to impose a special state tax on all stock exchange transactions. Mr.Dris avoided to comment on the information according to which, a 1% tax will be imposed on the buying and selling of stocks.

    [06] THE ACTIONS OF A POLICE OFFICER HAVE CAUSED TROUBLE

    Athens 2 October (MPA)

    The internal investigation ordered by Ministry of Public Order General Secretary mr.Papadoyiannakis, regarding the presence of a police officer in a meeting of a unionist party, will be completed today.

    Mr.Papadoyiannakis condemned the incident, stressing that such actions by police are an insult to the democratic policy followed by the government. He also said to reporters that an investigation is underway to determine who gave the order to the police officer in question to be at the meeting and if he acted of his own free will.

    [07] THE MINISTERS OF DEFENSE FROM S.A. EUROPEAN COUNTRIES MEET IN SOFIA TOMORROW

    Sofia 2 October (MPA)

    The Ministers of Defense from S.A.European Countries will meet in Sofia tomorrow to discuss the strengthening of regional security.

    Greece will be represented by Akis Tsochatzopoulos. The Greek Minister of Defense has suggested the establishment of a Balkan Security Council and a Balkan conflict prevention center.
