NEWS IN DETAIL[01] REPPAS: NO PROGRESS IN THE PANGALOS-CEM MEETINGAthens 24 September (MPA)The Madrid agreement is a framework of principles that can deal with the problems that have been created, reiterated Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas.The government spokesman also said that Greece believes in its positions and continues to promote them. Regarding yesterday’s meeting between Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem, mr.Reppas said that there was no progress as Turkey refused to lift its claims over the Imia islets in the Aegean or make an appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The Greek government spokesman expressed the hope that there will be results in the meeting of Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and his Turkish counterpart Mesut Yilmaz, which will be held within the framework of the Inter-Balkan Summit in Crete. [02] THE MEETING BETWEEN PANGALOS-CEM BROUGHT NO RESULTSNew York 24 September (MPA)The meeting between Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem, that was held in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting, was fruitless.According to mr.Pangalos, the Turkish minister reiterated the known Turkish views for a dialogue covering all issues. Mr.Pangalos said that this was a rejection of dialogue and further discussions had no meaning. US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will have separate meetings today with mr.Pangalos and mr.Cem. [03] THE GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER WILL MEET WITH ALBRIGHT AND HALBROOKENew York 24 September (MPA)Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos will have separate meetings today with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and US mediator in Cyprus Richard Halbrooke, after the fruitless meeting he had yesterday with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem. Meetings with ms.Albright and mr.Halbrooke will have and Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides.The Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers announced that they will have new talks in Crete in November during the Inter-Balkan Summit meeting. Mr.Pangalos met in New York yesterday with Archbishop of America Spyridon and among the issues discussed were the problems faced by Greece and hellenism in general, while they examined ways in which the Greek communities abroad could contribute more effectively to the promotion and solution of national issues. The Archbishop characterized the meeting as useful and constructive, while mr.Pangalos stressed the need for cooperation saying that the Greek Orthodox Church has a great tradition and is well received by the people. [04] GREECE CAN BRING THE PUBLIC DEFICIT DOWN TO 3% OF THE GDPAthens 24 September (MPA)Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance Yiannos Papantoniou, speaking in the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meeting that is being held in Hong Kong, expressed optimism that Greece will meet the Maastricht Treaty criteria next year and will be able to bring the public deficit down to 3% of the GDP.Mr.Papantoniou presented official data according to which, the Greek economy makes the right steps toward the European Economic and Monetary Union. [05] THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THE MISSING GREEK AIR FORCE PILOTAthens 24 September (MPA)The search continues for the location of the Greek Air Force F-16 pilot, who is still missing since yesterday when his aircraft crashed in the sea region near Agios Efstratios in the Aegean island of Lesvos.There is small hope that he will be found alive as several hours have already passed since the accident and no trace of the aircraft has been found. In the search and rescue efforts participate helicopters, a C- 130 transport plane, as well as Coast Guard and Navy ships. [06] CLOSE CALL FOR THE PASSENGERS OF A SMALL PLANEAthens 24 September (MPA)A failure in the wheel system of a small Olympic Airways plane put in great danger its passengers and crew. The failure occurred while the plane was flying from Athens to the Aegean island of Milos.The initial intention of the pilot was to land the plane at the Athens Airport but he was not able to do so because there was a problem with the equipment that is used to cover the runway with a special foam in case of an emergency situation. The pilot made a successful emergency landing at the military airport of Tanagra. No crew members or passengers were hurt. [07] NEW US AMBASSADORS TO GREECE AND TURKEYWashington 24 September (MPA)The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate approved the appointment of the new Ambassadors to Greece and Turkey, Nicolas Burns and Mark Parish.Mr.Burns has served as spokesman of the US State Department, while mr.Parish is a career diplomat and has served in the National Security Council and in diplomatic positions in eastern European countries. US Senator Joseph Bayden suggested to mr.Parish that he should point out to the Turkish government that it feels isolated from the rest of the world due to the fact that it has violated the international law with the invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and continues to do so. The US Senator said that according to the US policy, the invasion of Cyprus was a violation of international law and underlined that the Turkish military intervention was illegal. [08] THE ALBANIAN MINISTER OF DEFENSE IS IN ATHENSTirana 24 September (MPA)Albanian Minister of Defense mr.Brokai is on a formal visit to Athens today at the invitation of his Greek counterpart Akis Tsochatzopoulos.The two ministers are expected to sign a protocol which will determine the sectors of cooperation between a Greek army company stationed in Albania and the Albanian army, aimed at the reorganization of the country’s armed forces. [09] PLAN FOR THE CREATION OF A FREE TRADE ZONE IN THE BLACK SEAAthens 24 September (MPA)The plan for the establishment of a free trade zone in the Black Sea, proposed by the economic, commercial, technical and environmental committee of the Black Sea Cooperation countries’ Parliamentary Assembly, has been unanimously approved.The plan will be submitted for ratification in the next plenary session of the Black Sea Cooperation Parliamentary Assembly that will be held in Georgia in December. The committee’s two-day meeting was completed in Athens today with the election of Greek Parliament deputy Theodoros Kassimis to the post of its chairman. [10] THE ACCUSATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN TURKEY WILL BE DISCUSSED IN THE COUNCIL OF EUROPEStrasbourg 24 September (MPA)The issue of human rights violations in Turkey will be discussed in the Council of Europe Summit meeting of heads of states and governments that will be held in Strasbourg in early October, announced French Minister of European Affairs Pierre Moscovici.Direct accusations have been made in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, while the European Court for Human Rights has increased the number of public hearings this week to be able to examine more individual appeals regarding human rights violations committed by the government of Ankara. [11] THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH WAS WARMLY WELCOMED IN JALTAJalta 24 September (MPA)Over 200 people, headed by Archbishop of Simpheropol Lazaros offered a warm welcome to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who arrived in the port of Jalta on board the ship “Eleftherios Venizelos” where the symposium “Religion and Environment - The Black Sea in danger” is being held.Speaking in the symposium, British author and journalist Neal Anderson appealed to the Black Sea countries to adopt a procedure for the exploitation of the region’s wealth without damaging its natural resources.
