NEWS IN DETAIL[01] THE WORLD MOURNS FOR DIANA’S DEATHLondon 1 September (MPA)The world mourns for the death of Princess Diana. She and her Egyptian boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed were killed in a car crash in Paris in the early morning hours yesterday.Heads of states and governments expressed their deep sorrow for the tragic death of the ex-wife of the heir to the British throne. Prince Charles went to Paris yesterday on board a special plane and brought her body back to Britain. There are obstacles to the funeral protocol because Diana was no longer a member of the royal family. Her funeral will be held next Saturday. [02] THE MINIMUM TOTAL OF POINTS NEEDED FOR A PLACE IN HIGHER EDUCATION WAS ANNOUNCED TODAYAthens 1 September (MPA)The minimum total of grading points needed for a place in higher education was announced today putting an end to the anxiety of thousands of students.Education Ministry General Secretary mr.Zisimopoulos announced that this year the number of students, who passed the exams and were accepted in Universities and Technological Institutes, will be 54.888. What characterized this year’s examination results was the fact that the minimum of grading points needed has dropped considerably. The lists with the names of the students who succeeded will be posted up in high-schools all over the country. [03] PRIME MINISTER SIMITIS ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF TRANSPORT MINISTERAthens 1 September (MPA)Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, who met with Transport and Communications Minister Haris Kastanidis this morning, accepted the latter’s resignation that was submitted last Saturday.Mr.Kastanidis submitted his resignation because he felt that he was not covered by the Greek government spokesman’s statements regarding the recommendations made by mr.Simitis to certain ministers during the last cabinet meeting. Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas announced that the new Minister of Transport and Communications will be mr.Tasos Mantelis, who was the Undersecretary of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization and his place in the sub- ministry will be taken by mr.Stavros Benos, who has served as Minister and Undersecretary of Culture. [04] ATHENS IS READY TO HOST THE 2004 OLYMPIC GAMESAthens 1 September (MPA)Athens is ready to host the 2004 Olympic Games, stated mr.Lambis Nikolaou, a member of the International Olympic Committee, who also pointed out that last night’s bomb attack against the offices of the Olympic Games Biding Committee at the center of Athens, can not create problems.Meanwhile, the reliable British newspaper “Financial Times”, in an article published just four days before the International Olympic Committee decision on which city will host the Olympic Games, speculates that Athens’ chances to host the Games have increased compared to the other candidate cities. [05] THE PRIME MINISTER OF NEW SOUTH WALES WILL BE IN GREECE THIS WEEKAthens 1 September (MPA)The Prime Minister of New South Wales in Australia will visit Greece this week.During his stay in Athens he will meet with the Minister of Culture, other government officials and the city’s mayor. [06] THE CYPRIOT PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT MET WITH A EURO-SOCIALIST PARTY REPRESENTATIVENicosia 1 September (MPA)Member of Euro-Parliament’s Socialist Group mr.Ray Collins stressed the significance of the latest developments in the Cyprus problem after his meeting today with Cypriot Parliament President Spyros Kyprianou.Mr.Kyprianou briefed mr.Collins on the latest developments and on Turkey’s stance regarding Cyprus’ EU accession course. Mr.Collins, who is in Cyprus as a representative of Euro- Parliament Socialist Group President ms.Pauline Green, stressed that Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash’s position regarding Cyprus’ accession into the EU was not helpful in the effort to reach a solution to the problem. He also said that this conclusion is expected to be adopted by the Euro-Parliament which awaits for the opening of Cyprus’ EU accession negotiations next January. [07] MEMBERS OF HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS WILL MEET IN SOUTHERN TURKEYAnkara 1 September (MPA)Over 100 members of human rights organizations and parliamentarians from 15 European countries are expected today in Diyarbakir, southern Turkey on the occasion of the World Peace Day.The delegations left Istanbul yesterday within the framework of a campaign aimed at the promotion of the Kurdish problem and the sensitization of the international public opinion regarding the way the Turkish government deals with the issue. [08] THE VIOLENT PROTESTS OF THE ISLAMISTS CONTINUE IN TURKEYAnkara 1 September (MPA)The violent protests of the islamists, who are against the reforms promoted by Yilmaz’s government in the sector of education, continue in Turkey. In those reforms is also included the closure of religious schools.According to the news agency “Anadolu”, about 150 islamists attacked the ATV television station in Istanbul last night, because it openly backs the preservation of the secular character of the Turkish state and caused damage to equipment.
