  • [01] PRESIDENTIAL DECREES ON THE NEW METROPOLITES The presidential decrees on the appointment of three Metropolites, the procedure of their election is questioned by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, have been signed.

    The views of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the solution of the problems with the Church of Greece will be conveyed today to Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece by Minister of Education Marietta Giannakou within the framework of the gov ernment initiative aimed at defusing the crisis. Mrs. Giannakou appeared cautiously optimistic after the meeting she had with the Ecumenical Patriarch.

    Archbishop Christodoulos stated that he is hopeful that a consensus solution will be found after the meeting he had with PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou.

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew stated yesterday that law and order is not being disputed.

    The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece will meet on Wednesday and it is not known how many of the six Metropolites of the "new countries" will attend the meeting.

  • [02] THE ATHENS OLYMPIC STADIUM CALATRAVA ROOF IS BEING SLID INTO PLACE The fifth effort aimed at sliding the Calatrava Roof into place over the main Olympic Stadium got underway today in the presence of an International Olympic Committee, IOC, delegation on a visit to Athens within the framework of the regular inspections h eld in view of the Athens Olympic Games in August.

    The process involves sliding two 8,500-ton arches along rails on a reinforced concrete beam. Part of the glass translucent dome has been put into place, while the rest will be added as soon as the roof is placed in its final position.

    The sliding into place of the Calatrava Roof was already postponed four times and the procedure today is taking place under the supervision of Italian specialists who came to Athens specifically for this purpose.

  • [03] OPTIMISM BY THE ARCHBISHOP THAT A SOLUTION WILL BE FOUND The hope that a solution will be reached soon to the crisis between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Church of Greece was expressed by Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece after the meeting he had with PASOK President Giorgos Papandreo u today.

    On his part, Mr. Papandreou stressed that the unity of the Orthodox Church is necessary and he will help toward this direction as much as he can.

    The Archbishop stated that the meeting with Mr. Papandreou was held in a very good atmosphere and praised the cooperation he had with Mr. Papandreou when he was Foreign Minister.

  • [04] DIMITRIS CHRISTOFIAS VISITS ATHENS TOMORROW Cypriot Parliament President Dimitris Christofias will be on a visit to Athens tomorrow.

    Mr. Christofias will meet with Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, Parliament President Anna Psarouda-Benaki, Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis and political party leaders.

GIANNAKOU SEES GOOD WILL FOR THE SETTLEMENT OF THE CRISIS Minister of Education Marietta Giannakou, who met in Athens at noon with Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece, saw good will and a positive approach in the handling of the crisis between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Church of Greec e.

    Mrs. Giannakou stated that she briefed the Archbishop on the talks she had with the Ecumenical Patriarchate and given the fact that there was good will and a positive approach in favor of a solution to the crisis the government continues its initiative u ntil a favorable result is reached.

    The Minister of Education reiterated that the State does not become part of the problem neither interferes with purely Church issues, adding that it suggests procedures and ways for a solution to be reached.

    Mrs. Giannakou clarified that the presidential decrees for the three new Metropolites in the "new countries", have been signed.

    Earlier, while entering the Archbishopric Building she stated that she is cautiously optimistic, adding that a crisis lasting for some time cannot be resolved in one day and the government initiative continues.

  • [06] PAPANDREOU: ALL MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO HOST SAFE OLYMPIC GAMES The Olympic Games in Athens will be safe because all necessary measures have been taken and the message of peace will be the strongest message to be sent around the world through the Olympic Truce, stated PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou addressing the

    conference on the training dimensions of sports and the opportunities for vocational training they offer.

    The conference is held at the European Center for the Development of Vocational Training, CEDEFOP, in Thessaloniki.

  • [07] BIG LOSSES IN THE ASE Big losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index dropped to -2.63% at 2421.08 points, while the volume of transactions was at 139.34 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 35 had gains and 281 had losses, while the value of 43 stocks remained unchanged.

  • [08] THE GREEK-TURKISH AGREEMENT ON THE NATURAL GAS SUPPLY TO BE RATIFIED IN PARLIAMENT The extraordinary general assembly meeting of the Natural Gas Supply Public Company, DEPA, was held in the presence of Minister of Development Dimitris Sioufas and responsible Deputy Minister Giorgos Salagoudis for the sole purpose to appoint the new mem bers of the Board of Directors.

    Mr. Sioufas referred to the decisive role played by DEPA in the wider energy sector and to the ratification of the agreement between Greece and Turkey regarding the natural gas supply between the two countries.

    He also announced that the agreement will be presented in Parliament for ratification within the next 15 days.

  • [09] ROUSOPOULOS ON THE TERRORIST ATTACK IN CHECHNYA Violence and terrorism have no home. The terrorist attack in Chechnya is condemned in the most categorical way, stated Greek government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos referring to yesterday's terrorist attack in the Chechen capital, Grozny.

    The government, he added, extends its deepest condolences to the family of Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov, who was killed in the attack, as well as to the families of all the victims in the attack.

  • [10] ROUSOPOULOS ON THE TURKISH PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT The visit of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Greece confirmed the good atmosphere in bilateral relations and the very good communication between the two Prime Ministers, stated Greek government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos.

    Mr. Rousopoulos added that this good communication gave a boost to the prospect for a new positive momentum, a momentum toward the meaningful normalization of bilateral relations.

    Responding to a relevant question, the Greek government spokesman stated that it was the first formal visit after many years and foundations were laid for a new beginning.

  • [11] THE GREEK DEPUTY DEFENSE MINISTER MET WITH CANADIAN OFFICIALS Greek Deputy Minister of Defense Vasilis Michaloliakos met in Athens today with Canada's National Defense General Staff Chief P.P. Henault, Canada's ambassador to Athens Philip Somerville and Major Patrick O'Halloran from NATO's Policy Division.

    In the meeting, which was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, they stressed the strong friendly ties between the Greek and the Canadian people and expressed the will to make them even stronger.

    Specifically, they referred to military cooperation issues within the framework of NATO and the multi-national environment, while the Canadian National Defense General Staff Chief spoke warmly about the technical support offered by Greece in Afghanistan.

    He also stated that he is impressed with the preparations made in view of the Athens Olympic Games.

  • [12] MOLIVIATIS-IAKOVOU MEETING ON CYPRUS Greek Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis and his Cypriot counterpart Giorgos Iakovou discussed the Cyprus issue and the situation created after Cyprus' EU accession in the meeting they had in Athens today.

    Mr. Moliviatis also briefed Mr. Iakovou on the results of the Erdogan visit to Athens.

    On his part, Mr. Iakovou stated that with Cyprus' EU accession there will be European involvement in the Cyprus issue.

    The Cyprus issue is an international issue but today Cyprus is a member of the EU. Therefore, the Cyprus issue is inevitably a European issue. There is absolutely no doubt that there will be European involvement in the procedures for the solution of the Cyprus problem, stated Mr. Iakovou.
