    [A] NATIONAL NEWS

  • [01] NEW GOVERNMENT TODAY His government, which according to his pre-election statements would be "flexible and functional", will be announced at 12 noon today by assignee Prime Minister of Greece, Costas Karamanlis. Mr.Karamanlis' government will be sworn in tomorrow and the new

Ministers will then receive the Ministries from their predecessors, who received orders from Mr. Simitis to remain in their positions and turn them over to their replacements. According to the final results, ND, which won with a difference of slightly le ss than 5%, will have a comfortable majority in Parliament with 165 seats.

  • [02] DEPUTY MINISTERS OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT Two active Ministers and 9 Deputy Ministers of the Simitis government failed to be reelected in Sunday's elections. Minister of the Aegean N. Sifounakis lost his seat due to the rounding down, while Minister of Agriculture G. Drys lost his position to An gela Gerekou. Among the Deputy Ministers not to be reelected are N. Farmakis (Finance), N. Gesoulis (Education), N. Bistis (Interior), N. Thomas (Education), V. Kontogiannopoulo (Health), Al. Boulgaris (Environment, Planning & Public Works), P. Photiadis (Finance) and F. Chatzimichalis (Agriculture) if Mr. Papandreou keeps the Larissa seat.
  • [03] THE PRIORITIES OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT Speeding up Greece's preparations for the Olympics, the Cyprus issue and the economy are the immediate priorities for the first days of the new Karamanlis government, while the governing sectors to be focused on most are daily life, culture and public ad ministration. The President of the IOC Jacques Rogge, is expected in Athens on Saturday in order to meet with the Prime Minister and relevant Ministers and the rate of completion of the works is expected to be accelerated.
  • [04] SEARCHING FOR THE CAUSE OF PASOK'S FAILURE The reasons behind the heavy electoral defeat are being searched for in PASOK, while several officials attribute it to mistakes of the Simitis government, shortcomings, arrogance, and pointless moves made in the planning of Giorgos Papandreou's election campaign. There is much questioning and frustration, while an impression has been made by the fact that Ministers and Deputy Ministers of the Simitis government remained outside the Parliament or were very low in voters' preferences.
  • [05] LAYING THE BLAME Innuendos about the choices of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou during the pre-election period were made by Evaggelos Venizelos, who recognized that the main reason for PASOK's loss in the elections were the mistakes and shortcomings of the previous go vernment.

In an interview to the "Eleftherotypia" newspaper he placed blame on everyone's shoulders, he did not exclude Giorgos Papandreou and to a question on whether PASOK's opening to both the Left and the Right was wrong, he responded: "It is too early to make

such appreciations. However, it seems that citizens appreciate clarity, consequence and clearness above all else."

He stressed that PASOK must carry out a neoteric and responsible opposition to the ND government, while regarding the request towards G. Papandreou to "change it all", he commented that "the "change it all" proposal is charming. However we must be in a p osition to explain how, what and in which direction there will be changes".

The dominance of PASOKS introversion will be disastrous pointed out Costas Scandalidis, elected first MP in the I Athens electoral district.

PASOK will not hide the reasons that led to its electoral defeat, on the contrary it must deal with ND's program statements in a responsible and real way, said Mr. Scandalidis to Flash Radio.

He disagreed with those criticizing PASOK in all sectors and stressed that the changes in the Movement that began with the election of Giorgos Papandreou to its presidency must continue.

As far as PASOK's position towards the government is concerned, he noted that it must support national solutions to issues such as the Cyprus issue and the Olympics, and that it must carry out a constructive and responsible opposition.
