  • [01] THE PENALTY OF TERRORISM DA of the bench Christos Lambrou called 17N a fascist morpheme with a Stalinist outlook, during his proposal on the sentences to be passed against the 15 defendants found guilty in the trial for the crimes connected to the activity of 17N. Alexandros Gio topoulos, Dimitris Koufontinas, Vassilis Jorjatos and Iraklis Costaris are facing a life sentence, while mitigating evidence has been recognized for Patroklos Tselentis, Sotiris Condylis, Thomas Serifis and Constantinos Tellios. Nikos Papanastasiou and Pa vlos Serifis will be convicted for participation.
  • [02] RESPONSE AFTER THE HOLIDAYS The discussion of the Ecumenical Patriarchate's response to the Hierarchy, which rejected the proposal on the Metropolises of the so-called "New Countries", was postponed to a meeting of the Holy Synod after the Christmas holidays, while full observation

    of the 1928 Act was demanded. In statements after yesterday's meeting, the spokesperson of the Holy Synod mentioned the interest of the Church of Greece to resolve all differences peacefully, stressing that it "will go to any length to find a peaceful so lution".

  • [03] TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW The highest foreseen penalties for the 11 convicted defendants in the 17N case, for whom no mitigating evidence were recognized, was proposed by DA Christos Lambrou, who called the organization "a fascist morpheme with a Stalinist outlook", causing inten se reaction among the defendants. Alexandros Giotopoulos, Dimitris Koufontinas, Vassilis Jorjatos and Iraklis Costaris are facing a life sentence, while mitigating evidence has been recognized for Patroklos Tselentis, Sotiris Condylis, Thomas Serifis and Constantinos Tellios. Nikos Papanastasiou and Pavlos Serifis will be convicted for participation.
  • [04] SYRIAN PRESIDENT TO VISIT GREECE A formal visit to Greece will be carried out by President of the Arab Republic of Syria Basar Al-Assad from December 14 to December 17, in response to the invitation extended to him by his Greek counterpart, President of the Republic Costis Stefanopoulos .

    Mr. Assad will arrive in Athens on Sunday, at 18:00, while at 10:25 the following morning he will meet with the President of the Republic and at 11:45 he will lay a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. He is then have a meeting with the Preside nt of the Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis (13:00) and he will receive the Golden Medal of the Greek Parliament. He will then participate in a meeting of the Organization for the Promotion of Exports - Opening Meeting of the Business Council of Greece - Sy ria.

    On Saturday night, Mr. Stefanopoulos will hold a dinner in honor of the President of the Arab Republic of Syria in the Presidential Mansion.

    On the morning of Tuesday December 16, Mr. Assad will meet with the Secretary General of the Greek Communist Party, Aleka Papariga, and the President of the Coalition of the Left, Nikos Constantopoulos. After his meeting he will then go to the Foreign Mi nistry, where at 12 noon, he will sign the Olympic Truce.

    At 16:00 he will meet with the President of New Democracy, Costas Karamanlis, and then go to the Athens City Hall, where he will meet with Mayor Dora Bakoyanni, who will award him with the Golden Medal of the city.

    At 20:30 that night, Mr. Assad will have a meeting with Prime Minister Costas Simitis at the Maximos Mansion, to be followed by statements to the press. Mr. Simitis will hold a working dinner for Mr. Assad after the press conference.

    Mr. Assad's visit will be completed on Wednesday morning.

  • [05] HUMAN RIGHTS CLASS IN SCHOOLS Her proposal for the introduction of a class on human rights in schools was repeated by PASOK EuroMP and President of the Committee for Women and Equal Opportunities of the European Parliament, Anna Karamanou, drawing on Human Rights Day.

    In the framework of this effort Mrs. Karamanou sent a memo to Minister of Education Petros Efthymiou on November 24, asking that he makes sure that children are taught to respect human rights form a preschool age, and to extend the research for the incor poration of the class in all levels of education.

    The respect of human rights secures the personality of each individual anywhere on the planet and its defense is a supreme duty for us all, underlined Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece Christodoulos, in his message on Human Rights Day.

    In his message, Mr. Christodoulos stressed that Christianity gave a steady foundation for human rights and raised human kind offering an authentic and essential content to the notions of equality, freedom, justice, work, security, and solidarity.

  • [06] CONSTITUTION OR RIFTS The danger of the creation of rifts between European countries if negotiations for the European Constitution "take forever", was pointed out by Prime Minister Costas Simitis, two days before the Summit Meeting to complete the Italian Presidency. France a nd Germany repeated - at the highest possible level yesterday - that they are not prepared to back down so that an agreement can be reached "at any cost".
