NEWS HEADLINES[A] NATIONAL NEWS[B] INTERNATIONAL NEWS[A] NATIONAL NEWSLater in the day, Mr. Meta will meet with Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, and the major issue of the energy problem in Albania, and the promotion of an agreement stabilizing the neighboring country with the EU, will be the main topic of discussion. During his discussions with British officials, issues concerning the safety of the Olympics and terrorism were discussed. The Minister of Public order, while updating Greek and British journalists, was asked if the British have given the Greek Police any lists of suspects, and he reacted intensely, stating that it is a shame for out country that such things are said. When asked if there will be any arrests, Mr. Chrysochoidis answered that there have been no arrests, and there will be no announcements for arrests. He stressed that terrorism is an important issue, that there is an organized effort taking place to deal with it, and ha added that, with the British, an exercise has been planned to be carried out by the Greek Police in a few months. The fire spread to another car stationed nearby, which underwent severe damage. So far, no organization has taken claimed responsibility. Mr. Simitis will also make a one-day trip to Bucharest on February 5, accompanied by ministers and journalists. He will have meetings with the President and Prime Minister of Romania. The alliance's intention, as published in "Express" newspaper, was made known in a document that came into the possession of the General National Defense Staff and the Foreign Ministry, through its standing delegation in Brussels. NATO called on financia l reasons to justify this decision of doing away with the headquarters, so that tensions between the 4 Alliance member-countries may end. According to the document, air control will be directly handled by AFSOUTH in Naples. This adjustment will mean Greece losing its Air Policing Area in the Aegean - which is the same as Athens FIR - being handled by the Larisa Air Force HQ. On the other hand, Turkey will lose its grounds for questioning Greece's sovereignty in the Aegean. That is what justifies this peculiar Greek-Turkish alliance. In an interview to Flash 96.1 and statements to the press after his discussion with George Papandreou, Mr. Piquet pointed out that the Spanish Presidency will make all possible efforts to find common grounds and reach a final compromise on the issue of a common European defense. It is of special importance that the Spanish Presidency does not hide that it may use the US-British plan on the Euroarmy that was discussed with Ankara, since Mr. Piquet stated: "In all cases, what we call the agreement or text of Ankara, is an importan t consultative text for us. It took a long time for it to be agreed on, and thus, we must take the effort that has already been made into account, however, it is not a position of the European Union, nor is it a text to be approved without deliberations" Macedonian Press Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
