[A] NATIONAL NEWS
[01] REOPENING OF THE AMERICAN CONSULATE IN THESSALONIKI ON MONDAY
The American Consulate in Thessaloniki will function normally
from Monday, September 17. Due to the terrorism events that took
place on September 11 in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and
Somerset, Pennsylvania, and due to the many condolences of the
people of northern Greece, the American consulate has opened a
book of condolences. Any who wish to express their condolences by
signing the book may address Mr. Tiano at the American Embassy on
September 17 and 19 from 9am until 12 noon.
[02] KARAMANLIS VISIT TO THESSALONIKI SEPTEMBER 29-30
On September 29-30 the President of New Democracy will visit
Thessaloniki, after a postponing of the three day visit to the
TIF, that would have started today.
The postponement is due to the fact that Mr. Karamanlis
remains unable to leave Boston because US airports are closed due
to the terrorist strike.
[03] LETTER FROM ASSOCIATION OF EDITORS OF DAILY NEWSPAPERS IN
ATHENS (ESHEA) TO AMERICAN JOURNALISTS
The board of directors of ESHEA expressed its deep grief for
the victims of the tragedy, in a letter sent to the journalist
Associations of the US and to the International Journalist
Federation.
The letter mentions: "All that happened in New York and in
Washington is revolting and horrible to any person for the
insanity of violence which is reproduced in many forms in our
world. We are living a new form of globalization, that of fear and
insecurity. In this general absurdity, we are certain that in this
case the journalistic function will serve all those values that
ensure life, peace, the liberties and the prosperity of humanity".
[04] EXTREME SECURITY MEASURES IN SOUDA BASE
The American base in Souda, has been put under extreme
security measures, after the terrorist strike on the US.
Guards and snipers are ready on areas in and out of the base,
while in the area of Mouzoura, Greek Police forces are constantly
patrolling.
According to the command of the Base, the American Base in
Souda in on the highest level of alert.
[05] ALL OLYMPIC AIRWAYS FLIGHTS TO NEW YORK AND CANADA CANCELLED
All scheduled flights of Olympic Airways to New York and
Canada have been cancelled. As was announced by the company,
flights 411 to New York and 423 to Canada, are cancelled.
[06] THE FEELINGS OF ATHENIANS ON THE TERRORIST ATTACKS RECORDED
BY A "KAPA REASEARCH" SURVEY
The feelings of Athenians, a few hours after the terrorist
strike on the was recorded by the survey performed by "Kapa
Reseaarch" on behalf of the NET Television show, "Protagonists".
The company asked the 600 people who were the sample of the
survey to answer how they feel after the terrorist strike in the
US. Rage, disgust, outrageous, cruel murderers, was answered by
16%, I'm opposed to, disapprove of 8%, crime, sorrow, worried 43%,
worried for what will happen next 10%, baffled, what happened is
unbelievable 2%, mixed feelings, sorry but they deserved it 11%,
it was to be expected, they were looking for trouble 2%, it was to
be expected, serves them right 5%.
[07] GREEK RESCUE TEAM READY TO MOVE TO US
The Greek Rescue Team, stated that it was ready to move to
the US with a rescue crew supported by search and rescue
equipment, from the first second of the tragic events in the US.
For this reason they are in constant contact with the
relevant services, so as to be ready to move as soon as the
airports are re-functioning.

[08] P. EFTHYMIOU IN FRANCE
A series of meetings with his French counterpart, Jacques Lang and
the Deputy Minister of Professional Training Jean Luc Melanson
have been taking place since last night by the Minister of
Education Petros Efthymiou, who is making an official visit to
France.
During the meeting Mr. Efthymiou had with Mr. Melanson a
promotion of bilateral agreements on issues of professional
education and organization will be promoted. The Ministries of
Education of the two countries will cooperate for the
materialization of a pilot program the creation of a diploma with
a unified content in the member states, on hotel professions.
Also, issues related to the cooperation between Greece and
France in education were discussed yesterday afternoon by the
Minister of Education and his French counterpart.
In the framework of his visit to France, Mr. Efthymiou
declared, yesterday, the opening of the works of the 5th
International Conference of Greek Linguistics, which is taking
place in Sorbonne University.
[09] SIGNING OF MEMORANDUM BETWEEN "ATHENS 2004" AND INTERNATIONAL
ATHENS AIRPORT
The Memorandum for Cooperation and a Common Outlook between
the Athens International Airport and the Organizing Committee of
the Olympic Games Athens 2004 (OEOA), will be signed today.
The Memorandum will be signed by the President of the OEOA
Athens 2004 Gianna Aggelopoulou-Daskalaki and the General Director
of the International Airport Dr. Matthias Mitscherlich
[10] GREEKS - VICTIMS IN NEW YORK
The names on one dead and 2 missing Greeks living abroad were
affirmed by the General Consulate of New York. Michael Tarou, son
of the President of the Cypriot Federation of Florida is dead, who
was a air host on the United Airlines flight, which was taken over
by terrorists.
The 27-year-old Greek Cypriot Ioanna Achladioti, who was
working in an insurance company òn the 101st floor of the second
tower of the World Trade Center and Giannis Katsimatidis, brother
of Anthoula Katsimadi, assistant off the Governor of New York John
Patakis, are missing.

[11] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH POSTPONES VISIT TO KRETE
Due to the "tragic events in the USA and the crucial moments
the world will go through during the next few days", Ecumenical
Patriarch Bartholomew postponed his programmed visit to Krete.
The Ecumenical Patriarch sent a telegram with his condolences
to the Archbishop of America, Dimitrios, the President and the
Vice President of the US, the Ministers of National Defense and
Foreign Secretaries, as well as the US Ambassador in Ankara and
the Consul General in Istanbul, in which he expresses his deepest
sympathies to the families of the innocent victims of the
terrorist attacks.
[12] CHRISTODOULOS LETTER TO BUSH
A swift healing of wounds from the attack made on the US, was
wished for by Archbishop Christodoulos in a letter sent from
Serbia, where he is at this time, to the President of the US,
George Bush.
"Greeks, just like Serbians, had the courage to denounce the
unjust bombing against civilians by your nation two years ago, and
with the same frankness and fighting spirit, condemn this
terrorist action", stressed the Archbishop, addressing the
faithful in a Serbian church.
[13] DEFENSE MINISTER OF FYROM IN FLORINA
From hour to hour the delegation of the Defense Minister of
FYROM is arriving in Florina, headed by Minister Vlado Boutsofski,
in order to observe the final phase of the military exercise
"Philippos 2001", which is taking place in that area.
The visit was decided after the invitation from the Greek
Minister of Defense, Akis Tsohatzopoulos. After the completion of
the exercise, the two ministers will have an official meeting.
The Head of Staff of FYROM, Lietenant General Metodi
Staboliski, is also part of the FYROM delegation, and he will have
discussions with the Head of Staff ofNatioanal Defense, General
Manousso Paragioudaki and Head of Staff Lieutenant General Giorgos
Antonakopoulos.
[14] LETTER EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES FROM BARTHOLOMEW TO DIMITRIOS
His condolences towards the American Greeks living abroad,
for the "inhuman, terrorist and criminal strikes", which resulted
in innocent victims from among the American people, were expressed
by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in a message sent to
Archbishop of America Dimitrios.
"Every Christian soul condemns this insane criminal act
without a second doubt, and prays with all his soul that God may
disarm any aspiring criminals that would commit such acts in the
future", stressed the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Finally, Mr. Bartholomew prays to God that the souls of the
victims may rest in peace and that he may console their families.
[15] TH. SPYROPOULOS LETTER TO US PRESIDENT ON TERRORIST ATTACKS
His condolences for the innocent victims of the terrorist
strikes in the US, expressed the President of the Greek-American
Council, Theodoros Spyropoulos, in a letter he sent to the
President of the US, George Bush.
Mr. Spyropoulos stressed that the Greek-American Council will
stand at the side of the US President in every way, and added that
"with sorrow, terror and rage, we watch the terrifying strikes in
New York, Washington and maybe other cities in the US, by
terrorists, who turn against unarmed American civilians".
Furthermore, he noted that terrorism is a vile action from
individuals with no respect for human life or the law that governs
civilized society, and expressed the conviction that the Congress
and the Senate will act intensely to reaffirm the feeling of
security to the American people and give it the strength to
continue its daily life.
[16] SPECIAL HOTLINE TO THE GREEK CONSULE IN NEW YORK FOR
INFORMATION ON MISSING GREEKS
The Greek Consulate is trying to concentrate information on
the well being of Greeks working in businesses housed in the twin
towers of New York and the surrounding area.
There is a special hotline in the New York Consulate, where
Greek citizens or Greeks living abroad may call if they have
relatives or friends that are considered missing.

There is no official information on our compatriots who were
in the buildings, or in nearby offices, as the work of the rescue
crews continues.
The Consul General in New York, Giorgos Platis, and the
Archbishop of America, Dimitrios visited hospitals.
The Greek consulate in constant contact with the Greek
Government and notified US authorities our country's intention to
send rescue teams to the US.
[17] SAE APPEAL FOR GREEKS LIVING ABROAD CONTRIBUTION
The Council of Greeks Living Abroad (district of North and
South America) calls all Greeks living in the US to assist in the
support of the families and the victims of the terrorist attacks
in the US.
For that reason anyone who wishes to may contribute by depositing
an amount to any branch of Atlantic Bank (New York or Chicago), or

[18] THOMAS MILLER: "COMING TO GREECE IS A GREAT HONOR"
Thomas Miller, who is being sworn in as the new ambassador of
the US to Greece next week, stated that he is excited about his
appointment, in an interview he gave to Mr. Giorgos Bistis of the
Greek Service "Voice of America".
In this interview, which was given before the dramatic events
in the US, Mr. Miller confessed that he himself as much as his
wife preferred the American embassy in Athens, more than any other
embassy in the world. And that is why when President Bush and
Foreign Secretary Collin Powel appointed him there he was "lively
moved and greatly honored" that he was asked to serve in Greece
again. It was like a dream come true, again.
Thomas Powel has a very positive opinion of Greece in which
he has many personal and professional friends. Greece, he said,
"is a wonderful country with beautiful life, there is a deep sense
of every issue there, sometimes a lot of passion, but in all
honesty I enjoy all those things, it is the style I love".
[19] ARCHBISHOP DIMITRIOS AT THE SCENE OF THE TRAGEDY
The area of the tragedy in south Manhattan was visited
Archbishop of America Dimitrios. The Archbishop, after a special
permit was granted by the security authorities, he walked in the
area of the terrorist attack where the skyscrapers fell, moved and
in awe. He spoke with spokespersons of the police. The fire
department and the rescue crew, offering blessings, gratitude for
their work and expressed the undivided support of the Greek
Orthodox Archbishopric of America. As he said, he lived moments
and scenes that reminded him of the days Thessaloniki was being
bombed when he was a child, during WWII.
He offered a prayer for the souls of those lost by the
terrorist action and a separate prayer for the healing of those
wounded and a positive result for the rescue teams.
