The above decision will be regulated through a relevant amendment which has been tabled in Parliament to handle possible problems which could be created in Greece and abroad in electronic systems due to the so-called "millennium bug." [02] CULTURE MINISTRY DEDICATES YEAR 2000 TO GREEK POET SEFERISWeb Posted: 17:52 GMT+2Athens, 26/12/1999 (MPA) The Culture Ministry will dedicate the year 2000 to Greece's renowned poet Giorgios Seferis, 1963 Nobel Laureate in Literature, marking the centennial anniversary since his birth in Smyrna. A series of events will be held throughout the year, starting with Cyprus which will host a seminar onSeferis. A vast selection of photographs, manuscripts and personal items will be on display in Athens in an exhibition that will travel throughout the cities associated with the life of the man who is regarded by many as the greatest Greek poet of the 20th century. In Thessaloniki, millennium celebrations will include music, dancing, theatrical shows and other events in the foyer and surrounding areas of the restored Royal Theater in the northern port city. The port itself will play host to a 6,500m2 exhibition and design space geared toward the younger generation, while a design and cinema museum will be housed there as well. A.F. [03] THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL TO BE INAUGURATED ON JANUARY 2Web Posted: 17:52 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 26/12/1999 (MPA) The Thessaloniki Concert Hall will be inaugurated on January 2 by Prime Minister Costas Simitis in the presence of Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos.The Patriarch accepted an invitation to attend the event and will travel to Thessaloniki for this purpose. The facility has a seating capacity of 1,476 spectators and can be used as an opera, theater and convention center. Its construction will cost 14 billion drachmas. The concert hall will discontinue its operation for three months after the two-day inauguration ceremony to enable finishing touches on the building before beginning operation in May. Attending the inauguration ceremony will be the minister of culture Elisabeth Papazoi and almost all her Balkan counterparts as well as representatives of the Greek political scene. A.F. [04] MACEDONIA-THRACE MINISTER MEETS WITH ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHWeb Posted: 17:52 GMT+2Istanbul, 26/12/1999 (MPA) The Minister of Macedonia and Thrace Yiannis Magriotis met with Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos at the Phanar on Christmas Day, where he attended the liturgy at the Patriarchal church of St. George.Mr. Magriotis met personally with the Patriarch, with whom he discussed the new climate noted in Greek-Turkish relations, following the Helsinki Summit where the European Council approved turkey's bid for candidacy to the European Union. The Ecumenical Patriarchate expressed his satisfaction at the Turkish response to his protest over New Year's Eve celebrations planned to take place in the historic church of Aghia Irini, in Constantinople. In his letter, the Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos had expressed his regret at the lack of respect for the historic church, and said the Greek minority strongly objected to the event. The letter concluded by expressing the certainty that all Christians would share this point of view. Aghia Irini, where the 2nd Ecumenical Synod was held in the year 381, is one of the oldest Byzantine monuments and of special historical and religious significance. Within 24 hours, Turkey's Culture ministry cancelled the planned celebrations. A.F. In spite of the added measures, 80 accidents have taken place since Friday afternoon, where eight persons were killed and 170 others were injured. [B] BALKANS[06] TURKISH ARMY LEADER: AEGEAN, A SEA OF PEACEWeb Posted: 13:57 GMT+2Ankara, 26/12/1999 (MÐÅ) The leader of Turkey's General Army Staff has stated that his country wishes that the Aegean Sea become a sea of peace.According to Turkish press reports, he also stated the Turkish military aircraft, which fly above the Aegean, are not armed and he also called on Greece to participate in joint Greek-Turkish military exercises. Moreover, Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit stated that his country needs to align its self with European Union legislation and to fulfill the Copenhagen criteria. [C] WORLD[07] INDIAN AIRLINES PLANE HIJACKING CONTINUESWeb Posted: 13:57 GMT+2Kandahar, 26/12/1999 (MÐÅ) Hijackers continue to hold hostage the passengers of an Indian Airlines plane, although they have released 25 and one body. There are fears that there may be more victims aboard the plane.An envoy of the United Nations Secretary General traveled to Kandahar in Afghanistan in order to take part in the release negotiations.
