    [01] KONTOYIANNOPOULOS: I CAN RELATE TO PASOK

    Athens, 18/12/1999 (MPA) "I can relate to PASOK. I am inspired by the policy followed by prime minister Kostas Simitis as New Democracy has abandoned the neo-liberal principles, stated to Athens radio station "Sky", independent parliament deputy Vasilis Kontoyiannopoulos.

    Mr. Kontoyiannopoulos commenting on the opening made by right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis to those party officials who have distanced themselves from New Democracy, he stressed that Karamanlis can not invite back to the party the members he has personally written off.

    [02] ASSOCIATION OF RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN SE EUROPE "FORUM KRANIDIOTIS" IS FOUNDED IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 18/12/1999 (MPA) An Association of Research Institutes in SE Europe, ARISE, named "Forum Kranidiotis" after the late Yiannos Kranidiotis, will be founded in Thessaloniki in 2000. The decision was reached in the first meeting of the association which is made up of 27 research institutes and foundations from Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, FYROM, Moldavia, Romania, Slovenia and Turkey.

    The decision was announced together with the conclusions of the meeting in an event held in memory of Yiannos Kranidiotis.

    The second meeting of the association members will be held in Thessaloniki in December 2000 for the signing of its charter. Also, it was decided that conferences and exchanges of scientists will take place until the 27member Association is formally established.

    [03] VENIZELOS: THE ACCESSION OF CYPRUS INTO THE EU CAN BE THE POLITICAL SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

    Thessaloniki, 18/12/1999 (MPA) Greek minister of development Evangelos Venizelos, speaking in an event organized in Thessaloniki in memory of deputy foreign minister Yiannos Kranidiotis, who was killed recently in a freak air accident, expressed the belief that Cyprus' accession into the EU can be the political solution to the problem.

    Mr. Venizelos stressed that the only positive development recorded in the issue of Cyprus since 1974 is the opening of its EU accession procedure which will take place without being associated with the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    Referring to the Greek-Turkish relations, Mr. Venizelos stressed that the Helsinki decision has placed them within a European conception of what European legality and international system means and offered new arguments to Greece.

    [04] HALF A MILLION GREEKS FROM THE FORMER SOVIET UNION WILL RECEIVE THE GREEK NATIONALITY

    Athens, 18/12/1999 (MPA) Half a million Greeks, who almost all of them still live in the former Soviet Union states, will received the Greek nationality with speedy procedures.

    This is provided by the draft bill that was presented yesterday and has the consensus of all political parties represented in the Greek parliament. The voting on the draft bill will take place in January.

    [05] GREECE IS STILL A COUNTRY WITH A LOW CRIME RATE

    Athens, 18/12/1999 (MPA) Greece is still a country with a low crime rate in spite of the increase in the offenses committed in the past few years.

    Specifically, Greece ranks fourth safest country among the 16 European Union member-states.

    [06] THE BUDGET DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT HAS OPENED

    Athens, 18/12/1999 (MPA) The discussion on the 2000 state budget opened last night in parliament and it will be completed on Tuesday at midnight.

    PASOK's sponsor of the new budget Filippos Petsalnikos stated that it has a special historic significance as with this budget the effort for the country to join the EMU will be completed. He also maintained that the stabilizing character of the fiscal policy will be strengthened in the year 2000, while at the same time a significant restructuring of revenues and spending is being promoted aimed at a fairer distribution of tax burdens and expenses.

    The right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy rejects the virtual reality in which the Simitis government tries to entrap it, stated Viron Polidoras and maintained that the budget has no horizon as it only covers the period until the next elections.

    [07] THE COST OF CHRISTMAS TABLE IS AT LAST YEAR'S LEVELS

    Athens, 18/12/1999 (MPA) The market's supply with provisions continues without problems in view of the Christmas Holidays and market police make daily patrols to ensure that there will be no profiteering instances.

    Market officials estimate that the turkey-hen and other meat prices will remain more or less at last year's levels while inflation will not be affected. The prices of fruit and vegetables will be the same with last year's, while in certain goods they could be lower.

    [08] GREECE IS THE BIGGEST INVESTOR IN FYROM

    Skopje, 18/12/1999 (MPA) Greece is the biggest foreign investor in FYROM, according to data provided by the country's ministry of development. Based on facts published on the Skopje newspaper "Dnevnik", the investment capital that entered FYROM in 1999 was 3 million dollars and 90% came from Greece, while the economic deals signed this year with foreign investors are estimated at 170 million dollars.

    The most important deals were signed with Greece, according to the newspaper, which mentions that among them is the recent buyout of the OKTA oil refineries by the Hellenic Petroleum Group and the acquisition of Stopanska Banka by the National Bank of Greece.

    FYROM minister of national economy Boris Stoimenov characterized the Stopanska Banka deal with the National Bank of Greece as the biggest foreign investment in the country and stressed that the revenues that will end up in the state treasury will be over 144 million DM, adding that the National Bank of Greece has contributed greatly to the promotion of the banking sector reforms in FYROM.

    [09] THE RUSSIANS VOTE FOR THE NEW DUMA TOMORROW

    Moscow, 18/12/1999 (MPA) Over 107 million Russians will vote tomorrow to elect the 450 deputies of the new Duma or Lower House of parliament.

    The newspapers have published the latest opinion polls according to which, the pre-election race is led by Genadi Zuganov's Communist Party with over 20% of the voters. However, the war in Chechnya has increased the number of voters who support the pro-Yeltsin political parties.
