The above were announced by minister of labor Miltiadis Papaioannou in the cabinet meeting during which the national employment plan was discussed.The minister of labor stressed that in the current year 40.000 unemployed were offered a job, while 110.000 employed people received vocational training. [02] SIMITIS: GREECE WILL ATTEND THE HELSINKI SUMMIT MEETING WITH A CLEAR LINEWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Athens, 04/12/1999 (MPA) Greece will attend the Helsinki EU Summit meeting with a clean line and will do what is necessary for the interest of the country after weighing all factors, stressed yesterday prime minister Kostas Simitis speaking in PASOK's central committee meeting.Mr. Simitis stressed that the government policy was proven to be right in every sector and spoke of the Greek revolution held by the governing socialist party of PASOK, while he accused the opposition of costless rhetoric and demagogy. [03] PRESS CONFERENCE BY FOUR DISTINGUISHED GREEK INTELLECTUALS LIVING ABROADWeb Posted: 16:54 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The picture of the Greeks, who are distinguished abroad in the area of culture, was presented in a press conference by four Greek intellectuals who live abroad.University of Europe president Ms. Eleni Glikatzi Arveler stated that the Greek civilization has a continuous and a brotherless character, stressing that this is proven by the Greek language which is not dead and but o the contrary it constitutes an abridgement of the Greek spirit. Soprano Vaso Papantoniou stated that the Greeks live in Greece but Greece lives in the Greeks who are not living in their country. She said that culture can be the hand that will create a chain which will bring the Greeks abroad to Greece without necessarily living in the country and concluded that "we should not expect much from the Greek state to which we should offer our assistance". Film director Kostas Gavras stated that he left from Greece because of the poverty which he characterized as a political problem and stressed that in France he found what Greece could not give to him. Author and Greek ambassador to UNESCO Vasilis Vasilikos stated that the only exportable product of Greece is its civilization and referred to the many Greeks who are distinguished abroad. He said that Greece is known abroad thanks to its cultural products and added that Greece owes to Mr. Bizas, the Greek origin lawyer of Nelson Mandela, the vote of all the African states which backed Athens' bid to host the 2004 Olympic Games. He also said that even president Clinton, when he said in his speech that "we are all Greeks", wanted to secure the votes of the Greeks who live in the United States and actively participate in the political life of that country. [04] PROPOSAL FOR THE CREATION OF A NETWORK OF GREEK COMMUNITY TOURIST VILLAGESWeb Posted: 16:54 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The creation of a network of Greek community tourist villages first in Greece and later abroad was suggested by the Greek Center of Investments and the responsible agencies of the Greek foreign ministry on the occasion of the 1st World Conference of Greek businessmen abroad.The suggested programme is based on private investment and it is believed that it will contribute to the further improvement of the Greek tourism and it will make the relations of the Greek businessmen abroad with Greece closer. Each village will cost 4.5 billion drachmas and the businessmen who will take over the project will receive a subsidy of 15-25%. Every village will be able to host about 8.500 visitors a year. [05] THE ASSOCIATION OF EXPORTERS IN NORTHERN GREECE PROPOSED A PARTENARIAT FOR THE GREEKS ABROADWeb Posted: 16:54 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) A Partenariat type event that will put the Greek businessmen abroad in contact with their colleagues in Greece was suggested by Association of Exporters in Northern Greece president Thomas Algianakoglou speaking in the 1st World Conference of Greek Businessmen Abroad.He also proposed the cooperation of the Greek businesses all over the world through the Internet. The goal of the suggested site will be the exchange of information on the conditions and needs existing in every market as well as the search for business partners for the materialization of specific investment proposals. The association president also stressed that the Greeks who live abroad and are interested in investing in the Balkans can take advantage of the experience of the Greek businesses and the distribution networks that they have develop in the countries of south-eastern Europe. [06] THE GREEK PARLIAMENTARIANS OF THE DIASPORA COORDINATE THEIR EFFORTSWeb Posted: 16:49 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The proceedings of the 3rd Inter- Parliamentary Union start today with the participation of about 80 parliament deputies of Greek origin from around the world. During the conference proceedings there will be an evaluation of the work done by the World Inter-Parliamentary Union.World Inter-Parliamentary Union president Nikos Papadopoulos, who is a Swedish parliament deputy stated to MPA yesterday that the basic goal of the members of the union is to establish parliamentary unions of Greek friendship and culture in state parliaments across the world. He said that the first step has already been made toward this direction with the establishment of a parliamentary group in Sweden with 128 members and Lithuania with 21 members, while other three similar parliamentary groups are being prepared in Britain, France and Germany and are expected to be established by June 2000. According to Mr. Papadopoulos, one of the main priorities of the World Inter-Parliamentary Union is the promotion of the Olympic Games ideal and the adoption of the Olympic Games Truce through the establishment of the Central World Committee of Truce in Greece based in ancient Olympia. [07] GRIGORIS NIOTIS IN THE FORUM OF THE GREEK WOMEN LIVING ABROADWeb Posted: 16:49 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) Greek undersecretary of foreign affairs Grigoris Niotis, responsible for issues concerning the Greeks living abroad, formally opened the proceedings of the forum of the Greek women living abroad in Thessaloniki yesterday.Mr. Niotis welcomed them to the 3rd World Assembly of SAE expressing the hope that Greece, Cyprus and the Greeks all over the world will appear stronger and more united to welcome the new century. The undersecretary of foreign affairs stressed that it is very important that dynamic groups such as the women, are included in this organized world entity of the Greeks living abroad. The Greek undersecretary of foreign affairs said that since 1995 it has been observed that the organized institutional forces of the Greeks abroad are being dominated by men and pointed out that women are those who work for the promotion of men to different posts. He expressed the satisfaction of the foreign ministry and the responsible agencies over the fact that starting next week the women will be organized within the framework of SAE with the election of an 11-member coordinating body. [08] MEETING OF GREEK INTELLECTUALS LIVING ABROADWeb Posted: 16:46 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) A two-day forum of Greek intellectuals living abroad opened in Thessaloniki yesterday with the participation of over 60 distinguished intellectuals and artists from many countries among them author Vasilis Vasilikos and film director Kostas Gavras.Undersecretary of foreign affairs Grigoris Niotis, responsible for issues concerning the Greeks living abroad, stressed that the cultural dimension of Hellenism is a basic element that must be taken under consideration when planning the future. Famous film director Kostas Gavras, who has made a career in France, stressed that the cultural presence of Greece abroad and specifically in France, is very poor and more should be done in order for the Greeks to make their presence more notable abroad. Author Vasilis Vasilikos, who is Greece's ambassador to the UNESCO, expressed his joy for the opportunity offered to exchange views and get programs underway in view of the new century. Poet Takis Varvitsiotis stated that the values of the Greek civilization are constantly undermined as the people have been turned into apathetic consumers and the spiritual values of Hellenism and Christianity are being seriously threatened. He also said that the large communities of the Greeks in the United States, Australia and Canada are being at risk to be absorbed by the country where they live and disappear in an anonymous reality. Greek Language Center president Dimitris Maronitis stated that the Greek language is unprotected. He added that it is placed among the weaker EU languages and efforts should be made in order to preserve it among the Greeks who were born outside Greece. [09] GREEK COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD COOPERATION NETWORKWeb Posted: 16:46 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The Black Sea Greek Civilization Center of Studies and Development will implement the "5+5 Program" aimed at creating the 1st World Network of Cooperating Greek Communities.The goal of the network is to bring closer the Greeks around the world from the Black Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Through this network the Greeks living in different parts of the world will have the opportunity to discover the elements that unite them as well as their differences that compose the mosaic of the world Greek community. The formal opening of the "5+5 Program" will take place in Thessaloniki on December 7 within the framework of SAE's 3rd World Conference. [10] THE GREEKS LIVING IN ASIA AND AFRICA TRY TO PRESERVE THEIR IDENTITYWeb Posted: 16:46 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The Asia-Africa Regional World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, focused its attention in the effort to preserve the identity of the Greeks living in these parts of the world.In the period of 1998-1999 the Asia-Africa Regional SAE was occupied with issues of education, culture, participation and organization of conferences, assistance to the Greeks in need, visits to regions with Greek communities and cooperation with the mass media. A significant issue that was finally resolved was the financial support of the modern Greek language department in South Africa's RAU University that was offered by the Greeks state. Also, the issue of the establishment of education offices was settled after a decision by the Greek ministry of education. Already, two education coordinators have been appointed in Johannesburg and Cairo for the current school year. Meanwhile, the establishment of a post-graduate studies' center named after Alexander the Great will soon materialize. The young Greeks living in Asian and African countries also have stressed the need to preserve the existing Greek schools and increase the number of Greek educators, while they have underlined that the teaching material has to arrive in time. [11] THE NAMES OF THE WOMEN ELECTED IN SAEWeb Posted: 16:42 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The names of the 9 women elected yesterday to represent in the Greek women living abroad in the 3rd Assembly of SAE were announced today.They are Douni Konstantina, Louka Chrisa, Drivos Patricia and Athanasiou Ioanna-Varvara from the region of Australia, Divaris Kiki and Varagla Maria from Asia-Africa, Sansman Anna and Kamateros Melpo from America and Papa Jenny from Europe. [12] THE MAP OF THE GREEK INVESTMENTS IN SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPEWeb Posted: 16:42 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) Greece's strong business presence in the Balkans is a "key" for the development of a close cooperation between businessmen in Greece and the Greek businessmen living abroad, and toward this direction can contribute the newly formed International Network of Greek Businessmen living abroad. The above were stated today in the 1st World Conference of Greek Businessmen living abroad in which Greece's role in launching business initiatives in the Balkans was discussed.Inter-Balkan Black Sea Business Center general director Panagiotis Mavridis outlining the map of the Greek investments in south-eastern Europe stated that in the first trimester of 1999, Greece occupied the first place among foreign investors in FYROM Specifically, there are 50 Greek investments that have been completed or are in progress in the neighboring country that worth over 230 million dollars. By March 1999, Greece had made total investments of 74.8 million dollars in Bulgaria occupying the 10th place among foreign investors in the country, while in Albania, Greece is second after Italy regarding its investments in the country worth over 100 million dollars. In Romania, Greece is fifth among the foreign investors with a capital of 452.8 million dollars. [13] THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE FOUR FORA AND REGIONAL SAE WILL BE COMPLETED TODAYWeb Posted: 16:42 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 04/12/1999 (MPA) The proceedings of the four fora of Hellenists, and Greek scientists, businessmen, and intellectuals living abroad as well as the regional SAE of Europe, the United States, Oceania and Asia-Africa and the World Conference of the Greek women living abroad will be completed in Thessaloniki today. Greeks coming from every continent had the opportunity to discuss their problems and exchange views.The proceedings of the 3rd Conference of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, will start tomorrow and will last until Wednesday with the participation of 700 delegates from every part of the world where the 7 million Greeks of the Diaspora live and prosper. After the speech of SAE president Andrew Athens, the introductions of the government ministers and the presentations that will be delivered by the delegates a discussion will be underway on significant issues such as education, culture, economy, the cooperation of local administration with the Greek communities abroad, the repatriated Greeks and the Greeks of the Black Sea as well as the communication policy on the Greeks abroad. President Kostis Stephanopoulos will attend the conference on Monday and he will address the delegates, while messages will be read on behalf of prime minister Kostas Simitis, right-wing main opposition party leader of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis and the rest of the political party leaders. [B] BALKANS[14] ONE PERSON WAS KILLED IN THE ERZERUM EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEYWeb Posted: 17:00 GMT+2Ankara, 04/12/1999 (MPA) One person was killed in the powerful earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale that was recorded in eastern Turkey yesterday and its epicenter was located in the province of Erzerum.According to local authorities, the earthquake caused damage in many villages in the Erzerum province. UN secretary-general Kofi Annan had separate meetings with Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash expressing the hope that there will be meaningful dialogue between the two sides.The Cypriot president presented the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the main issues on which Mr. Annan had called on the two leaders to be prepared.
