    [01] THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS MARKET IN GREECE WILL HAVE AN ANNUAL GROWTH RATE OF OVER 30%

    Thessaloniki, 23/10/1999 (MPA) Greek undersecretary of transportation and telecommunications Nikolaos Salayiannis stated in the electronic trade conference held in Thessaloniki that in the following years the telecommunications market in Greece will have an annual growth rate of over 30%.

    Speaking in the conference, he said that in the period 1997-1998 the growth rate of the Greek telecommunications market was 32% and the imminent freeing of telecommunications in the year 2001 is expected to give a new boost to the sector.

    Within this framework, the plan on the first permit for conventional voice telephone communication will be ready by the end of 1999, while the competition for the creation of a new Greek telecommunications organization will be held by next June. Also, by the end of 2000 the investors who meet the necessary preconditions will receive permits toward this purpose and this way the State Telecommunications Organization, OTE, monopoly will end.

    [02] ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 23/10/1999 (MPA) Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Yiannis Magriotis opened the 1st youth environmental conference in Thessaloniki stating that the environmental problems and the problems in general faced by society every day can be solved only through knowledge, adding that his ministry backs every effort toward this direction.

    In the conference participate children aged 12-15 years old from Greece, Cyprus, Albania, FYROM, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Turkey and Romania.

    [03] THE GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER WILL MEET WITH THE FRENCH DEFENSE MINISTER

    Athens, 23/10/1999 (MPA) Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will have separate meetings on Monday morning with French minister of defense Alain Richard and US state of California governor Gray Davis.

    The head of the Greek diplomacy will later have a meeting with Mexican interior minister Rosario Green.

    [04] EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 4.4 ON THE RICHTER SCALE IN ATHENS

    Athens, 23/10/1999 (MPA) An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Athens at 5:25am this morning and its epicenter was located at the Alkionides islands. For the moment no further details are available.

    The seismologists point out that the tremor should not cause any concern as there was no seismic activity in the region in the previous days. The aftershocks that followed this morning's earthquake were under 3.5 on the Richter scale.

    [05] THE ELECTRONIC TRADE IN SE EUROPE CONFERENCE CONTINUES IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 23/10/1999 (MPA) The 1st Electronic Trade in south-eastern Europe conference continues in Thessaloniki. The conference on businesses and digital economy is organized by the European Commission information society General Directorate.

    Minister of development Evangelos Venizelos stated that the electronic trade and the opportunity it offers has a special significance for medium size countries, like Greece. He characterized the electronic trade as a challenge for Greece, the Greek economy and the Greek businessmen because it allows them to be in a market of huge dimensions that invites them to exploit neither a big capital nor heavy investments but good and practical ideas.

    Mr. Venizelos pointed out that 14 centers of electronic trade are already being set up in the country, two of them in Thessaloniki, which have a special importance for the small-medium size businesses.

    [06] PAPANDREOU-CEM MEETING IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 23/10/1999 (MPA) Greek foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will meet with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem on the sidelines of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation conference that will take place in Thessaloniki on October 26 and 27.

    Meanwhile, yesterday the first phase of the third round of the Greek- Turkish dialogue which, was held with the participation of representatives of the responsible ministries from both countries, was completed in Ankara. In the second phase of the third round of the Greek-Turkish dialogue that will be held in Athens will be examined issues concerning culture, multilateral and regional cooperation and the safety of the citizens.

    [07] ANDREW ATHENS VISITED TIRANA

    Tirana, 23/10/1999 (MPA) World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, president Andrew Athens met with the Albanian political leadership during his recent visit to Tirana.

    In the meeting he had with Albanian president Redzep Meidani and prime minister Panteli Majko, Mr. Athens stressed that SAE will back the Greek minority which lives mainly in southern Albania, through the programs already implemented in the former soviet republics.

    Also, the SAE president met with Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and All of Albania and with Greek minority organization OMONIA president Vasilis Doule.
