[01] PREMIER RETURNS FROM VACATION IN SIFNOS TOMORROW
Prime Minister Kostas Simitis observed the Dormition of
the Virgin Mary at the island of Sifnos yesterday where he
is presently on a brief holiday with his wife, Daphne.
The Premier will complete his vacation tomorrow, when
he is expected to return to Athens. During his vacation, Mr.
Simitis reportedly worked on certain outstanding issues and
is expected to meet with the cabinet's economy staff in
order to draw a series of tax reliefs which will be
announced during the opening of the International Trade Fair
in Thessaloniki during the first week of September.
[02] 24 PERSONS KILLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS DURING 3-DAY
WEEKEND
Twenty-four persons were killed in 170 traffic
accidents that occurred during the course of the three-day
weekend where hundreds of thousands fled the cities to
celebrate the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
The highway patrol has taken additional measures to
facilitate the return of the travelers today and tomorrow.
According to state reports, only about half of the
vacationers have returned to the cities so far.
[03] GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER: NATIONAL CLEANSING HAS TO STOP
Greece's Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who
attended the celebration of the Dormition of the Virgin held
at the Panagia Soumela Monastery yesterday, stated that the
"ethnic cleansing" being perpetrated against the Serbs who
have remained in Kosovo has to stop, while also referring to
the Cypriot refugees who were forced to leave their homes
in the wake of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus as
"victims of ethnic cleansing".
Mr. Tsochatzopoulos called on international
organizations to intervene "decisively" so that the Greek-
Cypriots can return to the now Turkish-occupied northern
part of the island.
[04] MAIN OPPOSTION PARTY LEADER TOURS AEGEAN ISLANDS
The President of the main opposition party New
Democracy's Costas Karamanlis is continuing his tour
throughout the Aegean Sea's islands, accompanied by his wife
Natasa.
Mr. Karamanlis will visit Crete tomorrow and will
return to Athens next Monday.
[05] MICHAEL DUKAKIS TO VIST THESSALONIKI IN SEPTEMBER
The presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in
the U.S. presidential elections of 1988 Michael S. Dukakis
will be the guest of honor at Thessaloniki's Anatolia
College (ACT) on September 13 where he will accept the
school's Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and
Service.
Mr. Dukakis will give a speech at the inauguration
ceremony, along with Greek Development Minister Evangelos
Venizelos, US Ambassador to Greece Nicholas Burns and the
chairman of the Anatolia College board of trustees, George
Bissell.
Mr. Dukakis has had a distinguished career as the
governor of Massachusetts serving two non-consecutive terms
- and was voted "Best Governor in the Nation" by the
National Governors' Association in 1986. After the
presidential elections, he completed his third term as
governor and then entered the academic world. He has since
held several appointments at US universities, most recently
as a visiting professor at the department of policy studies
at UCLA.
[06] SAPES MUNICIPALITY TAKES STEP TOWARDS G/T COOPERATION
A delegation of officials from the Saps Municipality
recently visited Turkey's Ereglisi, an event that was
accompanied by the encouragement of he Foreign Misnter
George Papandreou and the blessing of the Ecumenical
Patriarch Vartholomeos.
Speaking to the Macedonian Press Agency, the Mayor of
Saps Dinos Haritopoulos stated that the said initiative
constitutes a step towards the establishment of a climate of
trust and good neighborliness necessary for the peaceful co-
existence of the two peoples and the development of the
region.
The visit took place within the framework of a
cooperation protocol signed between the two municipalities
last year which concern the sectors of culture, sports,
tourism and trade.
