    [01] REPPAS: THE MUSLIM MINORITY ENJOYS EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW

    Athens, 24/07/1999 (MPA) Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas characterized the public appeal for the recognition of "a Turkish and a Macedonian minority" signed by three Muslim deputies in the Greek parliament, as ignorant of history and out of touch with reality.

    Mr. Reppas stated that all the Greek citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs, have a duty to contribute to the effort for the prosperity and progress of the people and stressed that Greece is a democratic society where the individual rights and freedoms are being respected, adding that the Muslim minority enjoys equality before the law.

    [02] A PASSENGER SHIP RUN AGROUND IN THE CORFU-ALBANIA STRAIT

    Corfu, 24/07/1999 (MPA) All 277 people on board the passengers ship "Aphrodite 2", that run aground in Albanian territorial waters at the Corfu- Albania strait in the early morning hours today, are well.

    All the passengers were transported to the Ionian island of Corfu and the port of Igumenitsa in the Greek mainland, while the 50 members of the ship's crew remain on board as they are in no danger whatsoever.

    The ship, under Cypriot flag, was coming from Prindisi in Italy and its destination was the ports of Igumenitsa and Patras in Greece.

    [03] PANAGIOTIS THOMOPOULOS IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF "ATHENS 2004"

    Athens, 24/07/1999 (MPA) Panagiotis Thomopoulos, the deputy governor of the Bank of Greece, is the new president of the Organization "Athens 2004" Board of Directors, in charge of the preparations for the Olympic Games of 2004 that will be held in Athens. The decision for his appointment to the post was made by prime minister Kostas Simitis.

    Mr. Thomopoulos is 62yearsold and represents Greece in international meetings, while since last year he participates in the European Central Bank general council meetings.

    [04] ONE DEAD AND 13 INJURED FROM A GAS EXPLOSION IN A FAST-FOOD RESTAURANT

    Volos, 24/07/1999 (MPA) One person was killed and 13 others were injured, some of them seriously, from a gas explosion that rocked the whole city of Volos in central Greece around 11pm last night.

    According to the fire-fighters, two gas cylinders in a fast-food restaurant at the center of the city of Volos exploded for unknown reasons and most of the injured were passengers of cars that happened to be in the area at the time of the blast. All the victims were in their late teens or early twenties.

    [05] NEW DEMOCRACY BEGINS THE PROCESS FOR THE SELECTION OF CANDIDATE PARLIAMENT DEPUTIES

    Athens, 24/07/1999 (MPA) New Democracy president, Kostas Karamanlis declared the beginning of the process of submitting draft ballot papers with the names of the candidate parliament deputies of the party, after his meeting with regional party officials.

    The leader of the right-wing main opposition party stressed that quality and efficiency should constitute the criteria based on which the party's candidate parliament deputies will be elected by the party's regional organizations and added that New Democracy wants the best members of local communities in its ranks.

    [06] GREEK-TURKISH DIALOGUE BEGINS ON MONDAY

    Athens, 24/07/1999 (MPA) The Greek-Turkish dialogue begins on Monday at a governmental officials level in the shadow of the latest Turkish provocation and after yesterday's violations of the Greek airspace by 16 Turkish fighter jets.

    Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, Giorgos Papandreou and Ismael Cem will meet in Sarajevo on Friday, on the sidelines of the Balkan Stability Pact summit.

    [07] PREMIER TO MEET WITH KARAMANLIS AND TSOVOLAS ON MONDAY

    Athens, 24/07/1999 (MPA) Prime minister Kostas Simitis continues his round of contacts with the political leaders on the issue of terrorism and illegal immigration.

    On Monday he will meet with presidents of New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis and DIKKI, Dimitris Tsovolas. Last night, the premier met with the Communist Party General Secretary, Aleka Papariga, and the Coalition's president, Nikos Konstantopoulos.

    Mrs. Papariga said that equating unemployment and crime with immigration leads to disorientation and racism. She proposed that the borders should be controlled and the introduction of a new security corps. Nikos Konstantopoulos estimated that the government is wrong to link crime rate with economic migration.
