[06] UN: THE ETHNIC ALBANIANS HAVE LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE SERBS IN KOSOVO

    Web Posted: 15:57 GMT+2
Pristina, 17/07/1999 (MPA) The UN office for refugees announced today that the ethnic Albanians in Kossovo have launched a campaign of murders, kidnappings and persecutions of the province's Serb population in retaliation to the savagery committed against them in the past.

The UN office's representative stated that the protection of the Serb minority in the region is now the most crucial point. The most serious violent incidents occurred in the regional capital of Pristina and in the cities of Prizren and Orahovac as well as in the neighboring villages. In Prizren, about 50 Serb houses were burned to the ground in a period of one week within the framework of what appears to be a systematic campaign against the Serbs, stated the UN official.

The NATO peacekeeping force is unable to protect the Serbs and the rest minorities, while in the past 24 hours incidents of extreme violence have been reported, including bomb explosions and the use of fire arms.
