Kastanies, 19/06/1999 (MPA) The people of Evros in Thrace of north- eastern Greece offered a warm reception to the visiting Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos and Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece.

The head of the Orthodox Church crossed the Greek-Turkish borders this morning from the customs station of Kastanies and was received by Archbishop Christodoulos and the metropolites of the region, local officials and a big crowd of faithful.

The Ecumenical Patriarch speaking before the people who gathered to welcome him referred to the need for the preservation of peace and the strengthening of cooperation in the wider Balkan region.

Earlier, Archbishop Christodoulos had stated upon his arrival in Kastanies that there is a need for peaceful co-existence, stressing that the Greeks are peace loving people.

The city of Didimoticho welcomed the Ecumenical Patriarch with honors reserved for heads of states, and with the hoisting of a gigantic Greek flag of 593 square meters in area.

The responsible authorities underline that there is no problem whatsoever with the foods in the Greek market. Minister of development Evangelos Venizelos underlined the high level of safety and quality of the Greek products.

The scientists suggest that consumers should prefer the Mediterranean diet, while there is increased demand for the Greek food products by consumers in the European Union markets.

[03] GREECE AND THE UNITED STATES COOPERATE TO COUNTER TERRORISM

    Web Posted: 16:27 GMT+2
Athens, 19/06/1999 (MPA) Greece's strong reaction led the US State Department to make clarifications regarding the statements concerning the alleged training of Kurdish rebels in Greece.

The United States do not have proof that Greece during this period of time offers operational assistance or installations for the training of Kurdish PKK rebels, stated the responsible US official, distinguishing between proof and references. He stressed that Washington cooperates with Athens to counter terrorism and the United States make a distinction between the temporary protection offered to Kurdish leader Ocalan and the official government position on the issue of terrorism.

Thessaloniki, 19/06/1999 (MPA) Other 435 Kossovo Albanians, who arrived at the airport of Thessaloniki this morning, have already left for Sidney, Australia. It is the fourth group of Kosovars who leave for Australia via Thessaloniki.

In the past four weeks, a total of 1.670 Kossovo refugees left for Australia via Thessaloniki.

Even though the war in Yugoslavia has ended, certain Kossovo ethnic Albanian refugees still want to go to Australia for psychological reasons and according to UN officials, they are being sent to that continent because they have asked for it themselves due to the fact that they have relatives there.
