    [01] US MARINES ARRIVE IN THESSALONIKI TODAY

    Thessaloniki, 06.06.1999 (M信) The 26th squadron of marines of the US Army, consisting of 2000 men is expected in Thessaloniki tonight, spokesman of the Pentagon, Ken Bacon announced.

    According to reports from CNN, the marines will disembark at the port of Thessaloniki and military equipment will be unloaded tomorrow in order to leave for FYROM.

    "The exact time of the international forces entry and in Kosovo will depend on the serb side and the mode of withdrawal of the serb forces from the region", Bacon stressed.

    [02] VENIZELOS: MEASURES ON FOODS BY THE NATIONAL CONSUMERS' COUNCIL

    Thessaloniki, 06.06.1999 (M信) The National Consumers' Council is to ask the producers of food and drinks to give their consent to special security sample inspections, during it's special meeting to be held tomorrow.

    Development Minister, Evagelos Venizelos announced today that representatives of the Greek producers will take part in tomorrow's meeting aiming to promote a number of measures which will restore a feeling of security among the consumers and to secure the normal function of the market.

    Mr Venizelos reassured that constant and strict inspections are being made by the responsible officers and if needed the government will not hesitate to close its borders to food coming from countries like Belgium.

    [03] PRE-LECTORAL CAMPAIGN OF GREEK PARTIES REACHES ITS PEAK

    Thessaloniki, 06.06.1999 (M信) The pre-electoral campaigns of the greek political parties are reaching their peak, just one week before the euroelections of June 13th. PASOK's and New Democracy's staffs are preparing their leaders' gatherings.

    Leader of the main opposition party will address a speech on Monday, at an open gathering of his party's followers in Aristotelous Square, in Thessaloniki while premier Costas Simitis is to address his speech at the same place on Tuesday.

    [04] SERBIAN RADICAL PARTY READY TO LEAVE THE GOVERNMENT

    Belgrade, 06.06.1999 (M信) Vojislav Seselj's ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party announced it is ready to withdraw from the government, a few days after Belgrade accepted the peace deal on Kosovo.

    If Yugoslav army and police forces fully withdraw from Kosovo, or NATO aggressor forces from the US, Britain, France and Germany are deployed in the province, then there is no reaason for the Serbian radicals to stay in the government" the party's announcement said.

    "The withdrawal of all army and police forces will lead to a disastrous exodus of all Serbs of Kosovo" the announcement stresses.

    The Serbian Radical Party has 15 ministers in the 35-member government of Yugoslavia under President Slobodan Milosevic.

    [05] UN: BALKANS SHOULD BE RESTORED AROUND HUMAN RIGHTS

    London, 06.06.1999 (M信) The United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson called for human rights to be the center of any reconstruction plan for the Balkans to be discussed.

    In an article she wrote for the British "The Observer" Mrs. Robinson stressed that the Kosovo crisis must be resolved for the sake of every citizen of former Yugoslavia, who has been tormented by hatred and conflicts.

    The High Commissioner criticized the international community for failing to realize an emerging crisis in Kosovo, noting that Serbia's and Kosovo's reconstruction should include restoring of confidence in international legitimacy.

    [06] AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DENOUNCES AKIN BIRDAL'S IMPRISONMENT

    Strasbourg, 06.06.1999 (M信) Amnesty International accused the Turkish government of attempting to put down the work of human rights organisations by jailing Akin Birdal.

    The organisation said that this action coincides with "continuous pressure against the Human Rights League, which is the largest Turkish organisation in this field, by the Turkish state, aiming to repress its activities".

    "Human Rights activist should never be persecuted because of the lawful activities and should not be obstructed of exercising their duties" Amnesty International stressed adding that Akin Birdal is considered to be a "conscience captive" and the organisation is to launch an international campaign, in countries that respect human rights, aiming to achieve his immediate and unconditional release.

    [07] SERB FORCES SHELL ALBANIAN TOWN

    Kukes, 06.06.1999 (M信) Serb forces shelled the Albanian town Kruma and neighboring areas, according to witnesses and the OSCE spokesman in Tirana, who quoted observers.

    However, the French new agency reports that there was no information available on casualties.

    OSCE spokesman, Andrea Angelli said that the serbian artillery opened fire against Kruma at 8.00 pm. Kruma is situated near the border line where Albanian and Serbian forces have been fighting the last two weeks.

    Kruma is a town of 12000 people that the Kosovo Liberation Army uses as its base for the past couple of weeks.

    [08] NATO AND YUGOSLAV GENERALS RESUME TALKS IN KUMANOVO

    Kumanovo, 06.06.1999 (M信) NATO and Yugoslav generals resumed talks today on Kosovo, in Kumanovo, FYROM. Yugoslavia is expected to sign an agreement on the withdrawal of its air forces from Kosovo, in 24 hours time and the rest of its forces in seven days time.

    If the withdrawal is realized the hostilities will be paused in Kosovo. Meanwhile today's meeting of the G-8 was postponed in order to for the talks in Blace and Kumanovo to be better appreciated. Finnish President Marti Ahtisaari visits Beijing today.

    [09] AHTISAARI IN BEIJING FOR TALKS ON KOSOVO

    Helsinki, 06.06.1999 (M信) Finnish President Marti Ahtisaari left for Beijing today to meet with the Chinese leadership on the efforts made on the solution of the Kosovo issue.

    Sources said that Beijing needs more clarifications on the resolution to be adopted by the UN Security Council on Kosovo.

    [10] SPECIAL MEETING OF EU EXPERTS ON BELGIAN MEAT

    Brussels, 06.06.1999 (M信) Measures on restricting beef, pork and dairy products sales coming from Belgium are taken all over the European Union, after the turmoil caused by infected poyltry in Belgium.

    A special meeting of experts from the 15 EU member-states is being called tomorrow on the issue. In Greece, so far, 330 tons of poultry, eggs and by- products have been confiscated.
