NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANS[C] WORLDNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] SERB NEWS AGENCY TANJUG IS SAID TO EYED BY NATO AS TARGETWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 09.05.1999 (MPA) The editor in chief of the Yugoslav state- owned news agency Tanjug believes that the organization is among NATO's bombing targets, with an attack being imminent.According to Slobodan Lazarevic, media organizations are included in the Alliance's targets, which so far have struck embassies, hotels and open markets, not including the television building massacre. Mr. Lazarevic made the aforementioned statement shortly before his departure form Thessaloniki where he had participated in an extraordinary conference hosted by the MPA. The news agencies from all the countries comprised in the Balkan region, and those countries neighboring with the peninsula. met in Thessaloniki in order to examine the problems that have arisen in the operation of the mass media organizations as a result of the dramatic events taking place in Yugoslavia. Athos tomorrow, accompanying his counterpart from Portugal, Antonio Gutierrez.Mr. Simitis will also meet with the Premier of FYROM, Ljubco Georgievski, and both of whom will be guest speakers at a major Balkan economics conference to be held in Thessaloniki on May 10-11. The Premier of Albanian Pandeli Majko will also attend the event. The conference, an annual event held by the Federation of Northern Greek Industries (SBBE) will focus on the situation in the Balkans a decade after the deregulation of markets. Mr. Georgievski will be accompanied by FYROM's Ministers of Economy, Development, Defense and Foreign Affairs. The forum is expected to draw more than 500 Greek and foreign business figures representing 120 foreign companies and 280 Greek. A.F. [B] BALKANS[03] CENTRAL SERBIA, KOSSOVO ROCKED BY NATO'S BOMBINGWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Belgrade, 09.05.1999 (MPA) NATO aircraft staged bombing raids on Serbian central districts last night, making no exception for the celebration of V- Day. During World War II, Yugoslavia had been an ally of the United States and Britain, the masterminds of the present NATO aggression.For the 24th time since the start of the aggression on March 24, NATO jets pounded the city of Valjevo, the center of the Kolubari district, famous for its plums and raspberries. The centre of Uzice city where bombs destroyed the post office and damaged the hospital, theater, library and apartment houses, was bombed in two waves. The second strike was made 15 minutes later when rescue teams rushed to damaged buildings. Luckily, there were no casualties in Uzice, in contrast to Belgrade where fire fighters and doctors were struck by NATO missiles last week. A.F. [C] WORLD[04] GREEK PRESIDENT TO PAY VISIT TO ARMENIA ON MAY 11-13Web Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Yerevan, 09.05.1999 (MPA) The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will pay an official visit to Armenia on May 11-13 at the invitation of the republic's leadership.Before arriving in Armenia the President will make an official visit to Georgia. While in Tbilisi, he will meet Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, the parliament speaker and the foreign minister to discuss further development of cooperation between the two countries and regional issues.
