    [01] MR. PAPANDREOU WILL ATTEND THE EU FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING

    Athens, 13/02/1999 (MPA) Greek deputy foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou will represent Greece in the meeting of the EU foreign ministers that will be held in Paris tomorrow to examine the course of the negotiations on Kosovo between the Serbs and the ethnic Albanians that continue in Rambouillet, France.

    On Sunday evening, Mr. Papandreou will be in Vienna accompanying president Kostis Stephanopoulos, who will be on a formal visit to Austria.

    On Wednesday, he will be in Bonn for talks with members of the German government on the "Agenda 2000", the enlargement of the European Union, the recent developments in Kosovo, the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and issues concerning the Schengen accord.

    [02] VASO PAPANDREOU: THE BURGAS-ALEXANDROUPOLIS PIPE LINE IS VERY IMPORTANT

    Thessaloniki, 13/02/1999 (MPA) Greek minister of development Vaso Papandreou met with Russian minister of fuel and energy Sergei Generalov and with the president of "Gazprom" within the framework of her contacts in Moscow.

    Ms. Papandreou emphasized the importance of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipe line in the meeting she had with the Russian fuel and energy minister. She also underlined that in the current phase the facts concerning the Caspian Sea favor the construction of the project and added that the details concerning it will be discussed during the visit of the Russian fuel and energy minister to Athens next March.

    [03] THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC WILL BE IN VIENNA ON MONDAY

    Athens, 13/02/1999 (MPA) President of the republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will be on a formal visit to Vienna on Monday.

    In an interview the Austrian president backed the start of a political dialogue between Greece and Turkey and mentioned that he will discuss with Mr. Stephanopoulos the issue of the Greek veto to Turkey's funding by the European Union.

    [04] SIMITIS: PROJECTS OF HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DRACHMAS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN THE HEALTH SECTOR

    Serres, 13/02/1999 (MPA) Prime minister Kostas Simitis stated during his visit to the under construction new hospital of Serres that projects of hundreds of billions of drachmas are under construction in the sector of health.

    However, he said that things can improve more in this specific sector as they did in the sector of the economy and pointed out that the government's goal is the construction of new hospitals across the country. He said that at the moment 15 new hospitals are under construction, 25 are being improved and 21are restructured with an estimated cost of 260 billion drachmas.

    Mr. Simitis in his speech in a cinema hall in Serres, launched an attack against the opposition and accused it of lacking a policy, being hypocritical and following an extreme opposition tactic trying to block the governmental work in every possible way, while he also said that the opposition is at a dead-end.

    The prime minister also referred to the great achievements of the government in the sector of the economy and said that Greece will enter the EMU because of the progress it has made.

    On the foreign policy followed by the government, Mr. Simitis said that the position of Greece has been upgraded internationally and the fact that Turkey did not become a member of the European Union was a success of the Greek foreign policy.

    [05] THE MOBILIZATIONS OF THE HOSPITAL DOCTORS CONTINUE

    Athens, 13/02/1999 (MPA) The problems continue in hospitals due to the hospital doctors' mobilizations. Yesterday they decided to continue their mobilizations throughout next week.

    Meanwhile, the doctors of the Social Security Organization, IKA, decided to start a five-day strike on Monday across Greece.

    [06] SIMITIS AND KARAMANLIS TOUR NORTHERN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 13/02/1999 (MPA) Prime minister Kostas Simitis and right- wing main opposition party leader of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis tour northern Greece.

    Mr. Simitis is accompanied by a large government delegation and currently he is in the city of Serres where he had contacts with mayors and representatives of production forces, while he delivered a speech in a cinema hall. Tomorrow, he will visit the industrial area of Kilkis and he will speak in an open-air rally at the central square of Kilkis. On Sunday evening, he will be in Thessaloniki and on Monday he will visit the Papanikolaou Hospital and the under construction Music Hall building, while he will attend a working lunch with representatives of Thessaloniki's local authorities.

    Meanwhile, the leader of the main opposition party of New Democracy is in Chalkidiki where he will meet with representatives of the local administration, while he will speak to party members in the gymnasium of the city of Poligiros.

    [07] KOSOVO WILL BECOME A EUROPEAN VIETNAM

    Belgrade, 13/02/1999 (MPA) Serb president Milan Miludinovic warned that Kosovo will become a European Vietnam in case NATO proceeds with the deployment of forces in the region, according to a London Times report.

    US president Bill Clinton is expected to intervene today on the issue of Kosovo and according to information, he will refer to the US troops' participation in the peace-keeping force that will be sent to Kosovo in case there is a diplomatic settlement of the crisis.
