    [01] SNOW IN NORTHERN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 30/01/1999 (MPA) Bad weather and snow, problems in transportation and bitter cold with gusty winds hit Greece since the early morning hours.

    Snow falls in north-central and western Greece since last night creating serious problems in the provincial and national road network. Thessaloniki is covered with snow and cars need non-skid chains.

    Temperature in many northern Greek cities has dropped below zero and in Thessaloniki was -1 degree in the early morning hours. In the prefectures of Ioannina in north-western Greece and in Magnisia in central Greece 14 villages have been cut off due to the heavy snow.

    [02] ALEXANDROS BALTAS WILL BE IN SKOPJE IN FEBRUARY

    Thessaloniki, 30/01/1999 (MPA) Undersecretary of national economy Alexandros Baltas will visit Skopje at the end of February accompanied by a large delegation of Greek businessmen, who are targeting the market of FYROM.

    According to information, the visit of Mr. Baltas to Skopje will have specific goals such as the finalizing of agreements concerning the purchase of FYROM businesses by Greek investors.

    [03] KOSTAS KARAMANLIS IS IN BONN

    Athens, 30/01/1999 (MPA) Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis is in Bonn to participate in the two-day conference of the New Democracy party organizations in Germany which will also be attended by ND party representatives from other European countries as well.

    The conference will deal with the political prospects of New Democracy, its action plan in view of the Euro-parliament elections that will be held in June and issues that concern the Greeks living abroad. The New Democracy president will meet on Monday with former chancellor Helmut Kohl.

    [04] CONTACT GROUP: DIALOGUE FOR A SOLUTION IN KOSOVO

    Belgrade, 30/01/1999 (MPA) The six-nation Contact Group that met in London yesterday gave a one week deadline to the Serbs and the ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo to proceed with peace talks warning that in a different case they will suffer the consequences.

    US president Bill Clinton expressed satisfaction over the decision of the Contact Group stressing that he is ready together with NATO to support the Contact Group's strategy with the use of military force. The negotiations between Federal Republic of Yugoslavia representatives and ethnic Albanians in Kosovo will start in France on February 6.

    [05] SIMITIS ATTENDS THE EUROPEAN SOCIALIST PARTY SUMMIT MEETING

    Vienna, 30/01/1999 (MPA) Prime minister Kostas Simitis is in Vienna to attend the European Socialist Party summit meeting.

    Mr. Simitis stated yesterday that the presentation of practical solutions for the problems faced by the European peoples will be the goal of the European Socialist Party conference that will be held in Milan, Italy in March.

    The prime minister stated that in the first day of the summit meeting it was established that the progress in the economy achieved until now assisted in safeguarding stability and development in Europe.
