[B] BALKANS[05] EDEK HOLDS A CRUCIAL MEETING IN NICOSIA TODAYWeb Posted: 14:27 GMT+2Nicosia, 02/01/1999 (MPA) The Cypriot political party of EDEK central committee holds a crucial meeting in Nicosia today to decide whether it will leave the Cypriot government after the decision by president Glafkos Clerides to cancel the deployment of the Russian S-300 missiles on Cyprus.The Greek government has stated that there is no Pangalos-Kranidiotis intervention in the issue of the cancellation of the missiles' installation. In Ankara government minister Gurel, responsible for Cyprus issues, stated that the deployment of the S-300 missiles on Crete will change the balance of power in the Aegean and will bring Greece and Turkey against each other. [C] EUROPE[06] THE SON OF A GREEK BUSINESSMAN WAS ABDUCTED FOR RANSOM IN LAUSANNEWeb Posted: 16:27 GMT+2Lausanne, 02/01/1999 (MPA) Twenty six year old lawyer Stefanos Lagonikos, the son of a wealthy Greek businessman who lives permanently in Switzerland, was kidnapped on Christmas eve in Lausanne.The kidnappers demanded 1 billion drachmas from the victim's father, Petros Lagonikos, in order to release him and finally they let him go free after receiving 100 million drachmas 48 hours later.. The Swiss police in a giant operation, in which took part over 100 officers, arrested 8 individuals and the search still goes on for 26yearold Christian Pidu, the mastermind of the abduction, who was a friend of the victim and the son of a government minister. Pidu managed to flee to France and a police operation is underway for his arrest.
