    [01] THE GREEK PRESIDENT IS IN VENICE

    Athens, 14/11/1998 (MPA) Greek president Kostis Stephanopoulos and Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos are in Venice, Italy, to attend the three- day events for the 500 years of the Greek community in the city.

    The Greek president is accompanied to Venice by deputy minister of foreign affairs Giorgos Papandreou.

    [02] THESSALONIKI'S FILM FESTIVAL OPENED YESTERDAY

    Thessaloniki, 14/11/1998 (MPA) Thessaloniki lives in a "cinema fever" since last night with the opening of the 39th Film Festival that will last 10 days.

    The formal opening ceremony was held in the restored "Olympion" cinema hall and immediately afterwards the screening of Goran Paskalijevic's film " The powder-keg of the Balkans", that was characterized as the surprise of the Venice Film Festival, took place. In today's programme are included a total of 37 films.

    The screening of the Greek films will open with Pantelis Voulgaris' "Everything is a road". The international film competition also opens today with a German film.

    [03] MR. KAKLAMANIS WILL BE IN CYPRUS TOMORROW

    Nicosia, 14/11/1998 (MPA) Greek parliament president Apostolos Kaklamanis will be on a formal visit to Cyprus tomorrow at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Spiros Kiprianou.

    In his two-day visit Mr. Kaklamanis will be received by Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides and Archbishop Chrisostomos, while he will have separate meetings with Mr. Kiprianou and political party leaders.

    The Greek parliament president will be the main speaker in the anti- occupation event scheduled to take place tomorrow evening in condemnation of the illegal declaration of the Turkish Cypriot pseudo-state 15 years ago by Turkey.

    Mr. Kaklamanis will also visit the ceasefire line and the National Guard General Staff headquarters.

    [04] TURKEY REQUESTED OCALAN'S EXTRADITION

    Rome, 14/11/1998 (MPA) Turkey gave a 40-day deadline to Italy for the extradition of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.

    The foreign minister of Italy referring to Turkey's request stressed that it is within the jurisdiction of the ministries of interior and justice. Based on the Italian legislation, the minister of justice has the right to reject the extradition of a person if it is possible to face the death penalty in the country requesting his extradition.

    [05] PIRROS DIMAS MADE GREECE PROUD AGAIN

    Lahti, 14/11/1998 (MPA) The Greek national weight-lifting team made proud all the Greeks one more time in the World Championship held in Lahti, Finland.

    Greece's Olympic gold medalist became world champion for a third time and won a gold and two silver medals while he broke the world record when he lifted 178 kilos.

    This evening will be the turn of the Greek champions in the 95 kilos category, Kahi Kahiasvili and Leonidas Kokkas, to fight for a medal. Greece has already won the most medals in the event four gold, three silver and three bronze.
