    [01] NATO EXERCISE ENDS IN NORTHERN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 18/10/1998 (MPA) The head of NATO's rapid reaction force in Europe, British Lt-Gen. Michael Jackson, expressed full satisfaction with the degree of training and readiness of the Greek contingent after attending the alliance's ARCADE FUSION '98 exercise in northern Greece.

    Gen. Jackson said he was delighted by the level of training and cooperation among staff of the Second Armoured Division.

    [02] GREEK BUSINESS DELEGATION TRAVELS TO LIBYA

    Athens, 18/10/1998 (MPA) A Greek business delegation is to travel to Libya on October 22-27, on a six-day trade mission organized by the Arabic- Hellenic Chamber of Trade and Development, in cooperation with the Libyan Embassy in Athens and the Chambers Association of Jamahiria.

    The participants will explore sectors concerning irrigation systems, electronics, containers, clothing, medical and pharmaceutical products, fruits and vegetables, tobacco, etc.

    [03] GREECE'S HELEXPO TO CO-ORGANIZE "PHILOXENIA" WITH BRITAIN'S REED

    Thessaloniki, 18/10/1998 (MPA) A Hellenic-British agreement for the co- organization and mutual benefit of the international tourist exhibition "Philoxenia" is to be signed at the end of next month.

    The organizer of Thessaloniki's international trade fair HELEXPO will co- operate with Great Britain's Reed in order to further promote the Greek exhibition abroad and will bring technological know-how to Greece.

    Among the first results of the said agreements is the publication of the "Travel Weekly" periodical, which will be distributed by HELEXPO in Greece, the Balkans, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.

    [04] PREMIER TO LAUNCH INT/L BUSINESS CONFERENCE IN NORTHERN GREECE

    Alexandroupolis, 18/10/1998 (MPA) Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will inaugurate an international business conference to be held in the northern Greek city of Alexandroupolis on October 22-25.

    Expected to attend the conference are officials from seventy six countries including ministers, ambassadors, trade attaches and bank governors.

    Among the items on the agenda are energy networks, transport, telecommunications, small and medium-sized enterprises, and peace and security in the region.

    Moreover, the event will review the prospects for a new economic area after the year 2000 spanning the Mediterranean, Balkans and Black Sea.

    Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who is also the head of the conference's organizing committee, has personally called on the delegates to forge contacts in order to help expand cooperation in the region.

    Organizing the event is the Foundation for Mediterranean Cooperation, backed by the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, the Foundation for Mediterranean Studies and local authorities in the north.

    [05] THE SECOND ROUND OF LOCAL ELECTIONS TAKES PLACE TODAY

    Thessaloniki, 18/10/1998 (MPA) The second round of local administration elections in Greece is currently underway.

    The two main political parties focus their attention on the municipalities of Thessaloniki and Pireaus and the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Attica. Meanwhile,

    consultations continue aimed at securing enough support for the candidates in the second round.

    The election results will depend on the voters of candidates who were excluded from the second round of elections last Sunday. Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas expressed the certainty that elections will be

    held without problems.

    [06] PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS ARE BEING HELD IN FYROM

    Skopje, 18/10/1998 (MPA) The third parliamentary elections since the declaration of FYROM's independence are being held in the country today. Thirty political parties and coalitions will compete for the 120 seats in Parliament.

    The registered voters are 1.572.976 and the elections will be held based on the mixed election system that was voted by parliament earlier this year. Based on the newly adopted election system, 85 of the seats will be distributed according to the majority system and the rest 35 according to the proportional system.

    [07] ECONOMICS NOBEL PRIZE WINNER TO ARRIVE IN ATHENS ON TUESDAY

    New York, 18/10/1998 (MPA) This year's winner of the Nobel prize for Economics, Dr. Amartya Sen, will be in Athens on Tuesday, October 20, in order to present an address at an event organized by the

    Andreas Papandreou Institute.

    The Nobel laureate, an economist from India, will speak on "The political element of economic development: a tribute to Andreas Papandreou", The event will be held at the Old Parliament Building.

    [08] GAINS RECORDED IN THE INTERNATIONAL STOCK MARKETS

    New York, 18/10/1998 (MPA) Gains were recorded in the international stock markets after the United States Central Bank decision to ease its monetary policy and cut the interest rates. The situation has improved in the European stock markets as well, while impressive gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange where the general price index closed at 6.37% with weekly earnings of 15.4%.

    The Wall Street closed with a 1.4% rise, while the value of the US dollar dropped toward the DM and the Japanese yen.

    Greek minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou stated that the effort made internationally to deal with the global economic crisis appears to be effective.
