[01] DELEGATES FROM 76 COUNTRIES WILL ATTEND THE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC CONFERENCE IN ALEXANDROUPOLIS

    Web Posted: 18:27 GMT+2
Thessaloniki, 10/10/1998 (MPA) The 3rd International Conference, on the viable prospects of the new economic space that will be created after the year 2000, will be held in Alexandroupolis, north-eastern Greece on October 22-25. The conference, that will focus on the wider region of the Balkans, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, will be officially open by prime minister Kostas Simitis.

Invited to attend the conference are government ministers, diplomatic corps representatives and economic and credit institutions executives from 76 countries.

In the conference will be examined issues concerning peace, security, cooperation and development, energy networks, transportation, telecommunications and small-medium sized businesses.

[02] THERE IS STILL ROOM FOR A POLITICAL SOLUTION IN KOSOVO

    Web Posted: 18:27 GMT+2
Thessaloniki, 10/10/1998 (MPA) Historian and Greek foreign ministry former specialist on Balkan issues Evangelos Kofos expressed optimism that there is still room for a political solution in Kossovo, while at the same time he stressed that a US-NATO military intervention in the region will lead unavoidably, but not directly, to independence.

The solution suggested by Mr. Kofos is an initial autonomy of Kossovo within Serbia and later within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which in a generation time could lead to the independence of part of the region.

Mr. Kofos stated that at the moment the developments are speedy and it is very hard for someone to predict what will happen, adding that it will be interesting to see how the different parties view the likelihood of an armed intervention by the international community.

The Kossovo Albanians want this intervention in order to impose on the Serbs a solution that will give them something more than an autonomy, a solution that will open the way to independence, said Mr. Kofos, stressing that the cost will be great for the prestige of the United States, NATO and US president Clinton himself if they attempt such a dynamic move before they are certain that they can impose a final solution.

[03] MR. PILARINOS PROTESTED STRONGLY AGAINST THE APPROPRIATION OF THE MACEDONIAN PRESS AGENCY TITLE

    Web Posted: 18:27 GMT+2
Thessaloniki, 10/10/1998 (MPA) Former general secretary of press and information, parliament deputy and founder of Macedonian Press Agency Konstantinos Pilarinos protested strongly against the decision of the FYROM authorities to establish a so-called "Macedonian Agency" in Skopje misappropriating the title of Macedonian Press Agency.

According to a statement issued by Mr. Pilarinos, the establishment of a news agency by Skopje, through the misuse of the title of Macedonian Press Agency which was founded 8 years ago in Thessaloniki, has the international recognition and its title has been legally safeguarded in tens of countries, constitutes an act of provocation and deceit. He also expresses the hope that the government and the political parties represented in the Greek parliament will sense the severity of this special issue and will take the appropriate action.

[04] GREECE'S DEFENSE CAPABILITY IS BEING STRENTHENED

    Web Posted: 18:27 GMT+2

[06] SIMITIS: GREECE IS OPPOSED TO THE USE OF FORCE AGAINST BELGRADE

    Web Posted: 18:27 GMT+2
Athens, 10/10/1998 (MPA) Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis stated yesterday that Greece is opposed to the use of force against Belgrade. Mr. Simitis expressed concern over the developments, pointing out that the NATO decisions will be made during the weekend and will be implemented after Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the US State Department warned all US nationals to leave the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, stressing characteristically that in spite of Belgrade's assurances that there will be no countermeasures against US nationals there is a likelihood of uncontrollable instinctive reaction targeting them.
