[02] THERE IS STILL ROOM FOR A POLITICAL SOLUTION IN KOSOVOWeb Posted: 18:27 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 10/10/1998 (MPA) Historian and Greek foreign ministry former specialist on Balkan issues Evangelos Kofos expressed optimism that there is still room for a political solution in Kossovo, while at the same time he stressed that a US-NATO military intervention in the region will lead unavoidably, but not directly, to independence. The solution suggested by Mr. Kofos is an initial autonomy of Kossovo within Serbia and later within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which in a generation time could lead to the independence of part of the region. Mr. Kofos stated that at the moment the developments are speedy and it is very hard for someone to predict what will happen, adding that it will be interesting to see how the different parties view the likelihood of an armed intervention by the international community. The Kossovo Albanians want this intervention in order to impose on the Serbs a solution that will give them something more than an autonomy, a solution that will open the way to independence, said Mr. Kofos, stressing that the cost will be great for the prestige of the United States, NATO and US president Clinton himself if they attempt such a dynamic move before they are certain that they can impose a final solution.
