Summarising the talks that have been held on the political and the economic situation in Europe, Greek minister of defence and vice-president of the European Socialist Party Akis Tsochatzopoulos pointed out that globalization is confirmed by the effects of the Russian economic crisis on the European countries, the economic problems in Asia and their direct effect on the world stock markets.

Mr. Tsochatzopoulos underlined the need for the strengthening of the European Socialists ties with society, stating that today there is a need for all the progressive democratic parties of the left in Europe to strengthen their ties with the people.

[02] THE GOVERNMENT EXPECTS INFLATION OF 4.9% IN AUGUST

    Web Posted: 14:57 GMT+2
Athens, 29/08/1998 (MPA) The government's economic staff expects that inflation will drop to 4.9% in August. The drop in the consumer price index is attributed among others to the summer sales that have reduced the cost of goods.

The efforts of the ministry of development to lower the prices of food and other consumer goods such as the prices in spare parts create favourable conditions for the further drop of inflation.

However, it is pointed out that the monetary and stock market crisis as well as the gasoline price hikes could have a negative effect on inflation.
