    [01] GREECE'S NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM SHOOTS FOR THE SILVER CUP

    Athens, 09/08/1998 (MPA) Greece's national basketball team is eyeing the silver cup during tonight's match of the World Basket '98, where it will play against the United States.

    The Championships will close with the final game, played between Russia and Yugoslavia.

    Greece lost the chance to enter the final game, having lost to Yugoslavia 78-73.

    [02] ISLAND OF LESVOS TO BE REPRESENTED AT IZMIR TRADE EXHIBITION

    Athens, 09/08/1998 (MPA) The Lesvos Chamber of Commerce and the Foreign Trade Organisation are cooperating to organise the island's presence at the Izmir international trade exhibition set for August 27 to 29.

    The island will be represented by about 40 businessmen in an effort to promote trade between the Greek islands of the eastern Aegean and the Asia Minor coastal region. The chambers of Ismir and Lesvos are working toward this goal with the Young Turkish Businessmen's Union.

    [03] PRICES TO DROP IN MANY FOODSTUFFS AS OF TOMORROW

    Athens, 09/08/1998 (MPA) Following an agreement reached between the Undersecretary of Development Michalis Chrysochoides and the owners of Greek supermarkets, prices are to drop in a great number of basic foodstuffs.

    Prices are to be up to 10% lower in rice, pasta, beans and other foods.

    This is part of a plan to further reduce the inflation rate by the end of the year.

    [04] FAYUM'S PORTRAITS COLLECTION PRESENTED AT THESSALONIKI'S MUSEUM

    Thessaloniki, 09/08/1998 (MPA) The famous series of Fayum's portraits is currently on display at Thessaloniki's Museum of Byzantine Civilization.

    The portraits, dating back to the 1st and 4th centuries A.D. are characterized by an intense realism, the artist having employed a method that wavers between impressionism and naturalism.

    The exhibit will last until the end of August.

    [05] GREECE, ALBANIA TO SIGN COOPERATION PROTOCOL TOMORROW

    Athens, 09/08/1998 (MPA) A cooperation protocol is to be signed tomorrow between Greece and Albania, foreseeing joint patrols along the two countries' common sea border.

    The protocol is aimed at policing the region more effectively, such as combating illegal immigration, drug trafficking and unlawful fishing.

    A special ceremony will be held at the island of Corfu on Monday, which will be attended by Merchant Marine Minister Stavros Soumakis and Albanian Interior Minister Neritan Ceka.

    [06] MORE ELDERLY PERSONS SUCCUMB TO HIGH TEMPERATURES

    Thessaloniki, 09/08/1998 (MPA) Another four senior citizens died in Thessaloniki during the last 24 hours of heatstroke caused by scorching temperatures, which soared to 39C yesterday and high humidity levels.

    The bodies of two elderly sisters, aged 84 and 83, were also discovered in their flat in the Korydallos district of Piraeus yesterday after neighbors complained of an unpleasant odor coming from the flat. Police in Piraeus think the deaths are connected with the recent heatwave.

    [07] ALL FIRES UNDER CONTROL, TWO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR ARSON

    Athens, 09/08/1998 (MPA) All fires have been set under control, after having turned thousands of acres of land throughout the country into ashes.

    Meanwhile a Frenchman has been arrested after being caught setting fire in a forest region in central Greece, while an Albanian national has also been arrested in the Peloponnese after getting caught in the act of setting fire in a forest.
