NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] PANGALOS: HISTORY PROVES THAT THE DEEDS OF THE US PRESIDENTS DO NOT CORRESPOND WITH THEIR PROMISESWeb Posted: 15:22 GMT+2Xanthi, 25/07/1998 (MPA) Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos, who is on a visit to Xanthi in Thrace north-eastern Greece, stated that history proves that the deeds of the US presidents do not correspond with their promises.In spite of Washington's reactions, Mr. Pangalos reiterated today his criticism of the US presidents and especially of president Clinton. "It has been a habit for the future US presidents to give promises on the Cyprus issue they never keep. When Mr. Clinton was a presidential candidate", said Mr. Pangalos, "he pledged that the Cyprus problem will be resolved. I suppose", said Mr. Pangalos, "he meant that he was going to base his efforts on the UN resolutions, but I have not seen anything like that yet", concluded the Greek foreign minister. Mr. Pangalos called on the Greek Americans not to back any of the presidential candidates in the next elections. He called on the members of the Greek American community to offer their money not to the pre-election campaigns of the presidential candidates but to the Greek armed forces. He also insinuated that the new US initiative on Cyprus, under US envoy Thomas Miller, will not have the desirable outcome. On the provocative statements made by Turkish president Suleiman Demirel, according to which Crete was a gift of the Ottoman Empire to Greece, Mr. Pangalos stated that the Turkish president is a very generous man but the peoples do not make gifts to each other, except maybe in fairy-tales. [03] 40 PARLIAMENT DEPUTIES OF GREEK ORIGIN ARE ON A VISIT TO EVROSWeb Posted: 15:26 GMT+2Alexandroupolis, 25/07/1998 (MPA) Forty Parliament deputies of Greek origin from at least 10 countries are on a visit to the prefecture of Evros in north-eastern Greece, within the framework of their three-day visit to Thrace, the Aegean and Cyprus.The Parliament deputies embarked on their tour of Greece after the completion of the 2nd World Meeting of the Parliamentary Union of Hellenism which was held in Athens. The delegates participating are Parliament deputies of Greek origin from Australia, Canada, the United States, Ukraine, Georgia, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Albania, Romania, Sweden, Holland and Argentina. [05] PANGALOS IS ON A VISIT TO THRACEWeb Posted: 14:35 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 25/07/1998 (MPA) Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos is on a three-day visit to Thrace. He will visit the headquarters of the 4th Army Corps in Xanthi, the muftis of Xanthi, Komotini and Didimoticho, while he will attend prefecture meetings in Evros, Rodopi and Xanthi.Mr. Pangalos will also visit the delta of Evros river and the settlement of the Greeks from Pontos in Sapes. [06] THE GREEK FORCES' ARMAMENTS PROGRAM WAS DISCUSSED BY THE GOVERNMENT COUNCIL OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND DEFENSEWeb Posted: 14:35 GMT+2Athens, 25/07/1998 (MPA) The government council of foreign affairs and defense that met in Athens yesterday and discussed the Greek armed forces' armaments program worth 4 trillion drachmas decided the purchase of anti- aircraft missiles for the creation of a " protection umbrella" over the Aegean.The purchase of long range missiles (Patriot or S-300) will be decided in September, while missiles of short and medium range will also be purchased and the Navy will be reinforced with warships. Minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos referring to the Navy armaments program announced that the Skaramanga shipyard will build 4 gunboats, 3 submarines and an Option worth 123 billion drachmas, while the decision on the contractor company which will undertake the project will be made in September. [07] REPPAS: THE TURKISH LEADERSHIP BASES ITS ARGUMENTS ON THE OTTOMAN EMPIREWeb Posted: 14:35 GMT+2Athens, 25/07/1998 (MPA) The Turkish leadership bases its arguments on the Ottoman Empire, stressed Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas, commenting on the provocative statements made by Turkish president Suleiman Demirel.It should be reminded that in an interview with the Turkish newspaper "Milliyet", which was published yesterday, president Demirel had stated that the island of Crete was given to Greece by Turkey as a gift and this can not be repeated with Cyprus, while he made accusations of alleged ethnic cleansing by the Greek Cypriot community targeting the Turkish Cypriots. [08] CONFLICT BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND GREECEWeb Posted: 14:35 GMT+2Athens, 25/07/1998 (MPA) The recent statement by Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos that US president Clinton's pre-election campaign pledges for the solution of the Cyprus problem were gross lies caused a conflict between the United States and Greece.US ambassador Nicholas Burs made a demarche, while the White House spokesman characterized Mr. Pangalos' statements as unsuitable for a high government official of a country which is a close ally of the United States expressing the hope that they will be retracted. Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stated that it is not the first time that the US State Department issues statements that do not agree with the facts and are in conflict with the declarations made by US president Clinton adding that this phenomenon must end because it is in conflict with the existing good bilateral relations. [B] BALKANS[09] FYROM: NEW BOMB EXPLOSION IN KUMANOVOWeb Posted: 14:51 GMT+2Skopje, 25/07/1998 (MPA) Another bomb explosion, the forth in the past week, occurred just after midnight in the town of Kumanovo, 20 kilometers north-east of FYROM's capital Skopje.According to information reported by the Skopje mass media, the bomb caused limited material damage and no victims, while it is not mentioned in what part of the town the bomb had been placed. [10] DEMIREL IS ON A VISIT TO THE TURKISH OCCUPIED NORTHERN CYPRUSWeb Posted: 14:44 GMT+2Nicosia, 25/07/1998 (MPA) Turkish president Suleiman Demirel is on a visit to the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus today heading a 150member delegation. He is accompanied by minister of defense Ismet Sezguin, foreign affairs Ismail Cem, minister of state Sukru Giurel and education Hikmet Ulumba.Mr. Demirel will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and with Dervis Eroglu the so-called prime minister of the Turkish Cypriot regime.
