Thessaloniki, 05/07/1998 (MPA) Greek fire-fighters and the military are constantly at work putting out forest fires that have been sweeping across the country since yesterday.

So far, 61 blazes out of about 180 have been extinguished, with the others being under control.

Prime Minister Kostas Simitis stated that the fires are mostly due to the high temperatures that sizzled the country for three days straight and the high winds that followed.

Police are also investigating whether arson was to blame for some of the fires.
