The government has no objection to go ahead with a dialogue but within a strictly defined framework, stated minister of labor Miltiadis Papaioannou. [B] BALKANS[05] THE FIVE MISSING CYPRIOTS WITH US CITIZENSHIP ARE OFFICIALLY DEADWeb Posted: 14:42 GMT+2Nicosia , 23/05/1998 (MPA) The 5 Cypriots with US citizenship, missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, are regarded as dead officially, as the report published yesterday by the US government has dashed their relatives' hopes to find them alive.Based on the report, the death of one of them namely, Andreas Kasapis has been certified through a DNA test on bones found and according to the detailed investigation that has been conducted, the survival of the other four Americans is regarded as impossible. US State Department spokesman James Rubin mentions in his statement that US special coordinator on Cyprus Thomas Miller has delivered personally the death certificate of Andreas Kasapis to his family on March 5. Mr. Rubin also has sent his condolences to the families of the four missing and regarded dead namely, Sokratis Kapsouris, Kiriakos Hatzichristoudias, Christos Libertis and Kiriakos Sofokleous. [06] WASHINGTON: TURKEY'S STANCE HINDERS THE PROGRESS OF THE TALKS IN CYPRUSWeb Posted: 14:42 GMT+2Nicosia, 23/05/1998 (MPA) US assistant Secretary of State Thomas Pickering expressed disappointment for the failure of US presidential envoy Richard Habrooke's mission to win the reopening of the community talks in Cyprus.The US government official clarified that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash himself made it clear that Turkey insists in Cyprus' withdrawal from the EU accession talks and demands the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot regime in the Turkish occupied northern part of the island. The US official also stressed that the United States react to the Turkish stance that undermines progress. He stated that the US government will continue the efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem in spite of the disappointment caused by the failure of the Halbrooke mission.
