    [01] GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER: ATTACK ON CYPRUS IS CASUS BELLI

    Thessaloniki, 17/05/1998 (MPA) Cyprus defense minister Yiannis Omirou, who visited Thessaloniki today with his Greek counterpart Akis Tsochatzopoulos, said that Nicosia has the "good intention to suspend or even cancel" the deployment of Russian-made S-300 defense missiles if Ankara agreed to demilitarize the Turkish-occupied northern sector of the island.

    The two officials discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and bilateral matters of concern and characterized the meeting as fruitful and useful.

    They stated that they discussed the various threats and challenges that have been expressed recently and are disorientating for the substance of the Cyprus problem.

    Specifically, Mr. Omirou said that Cyprus has the inalienable right to defend its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, referring to the establishment of the S-300.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos expressed his agreement with the aforementioned view and, referring to the joint defense agreement between Greece and Cyprus, added that " we are dealing with the effort to strengthen our defense capability, given the developments. Work and tangible results are needed and this is what we are trying to achieve. "

    [02] GREECE’S DEFENSE MINISTER EMBARKS ON TWO-DAY VISIT TO SWEDEN

    Athens, 17/05/1998 (MPA) Greece's Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos embarked on a two-day official visit to Sweden this evening.

    During his stay, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos will meet with his Swedish

    counterpart Bjorn von Sydow and foreign minister Lena Hjelm-Wallen.

    [03] BANK EMPLOYEES TO EMBARK ON ROTATION STRIKES

    Athens, 17/05/1998 (MPA) In protest to the state's privatization plans for the Ionian Bank, employees at the Agricultural Bank of Greece are to strike tomorrow, while their colleagues at Commercial and Attica banks will strike on Tuesday.

    The employees at Ionian Bank have been on an indefinite strike for a week, while rolling strikes by bank staff are scheduled to continue until June 12 when the shareholders of Commercial Bank vote on whether they will approve the sale of subsidiary Ionian.

    [04] THESSALONIKI’S MAYOR RESIGNS «IN DISGUST»

    Thessaloniki, 17/05/1998 (MPA) Thessaloniki's mayor Konstantinos Kosmopoulos announced his resignation, lashing out against the oppositon party's leader, New Democracy's Kostas Karamanlis for not having granted the mayor his support and for having opted to support a younger candidate, Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, to run in October's local government elections.

    Mr. Kosmopoulos, had won the last two elections and has served as mayor of Thessaloniki for the last 10 years. His position will be filled by one of his deputies until the polls.

    The PASOK-backed candidate for the mayorship is Thrasivoulos Lazaridis.

    [05] PM’S SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC POLICY APPROVED BY CENTRAL COMMITTEE

    Athens, 17/05/1998 (MPA) The majority of the ruling PASOK party's central committee members approved the measures announced by the Premier Kostas Simitis concerning the government's social and economic policies.

    Only eight members voted against the Premier's proposals and six abstained from the voting process.

    Closing the two day conference, Mr.Simitis stated that the government's primary aim is the country's accession to the Economic and monetary Union, but stressed that social justice and the welfare state remain priorities.

    [06] DEFENSE MINISTERS OF GREECE, CYPRUS MEET IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 17/05/1998 (MPA) The Defense Minister of Cyprus Yiannis Omirou and his Greek counterpart Akis Tsochatzopoulos met in Thessaloniki this morning, their second meeting after having talked in Athens yesterday. The two discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the joint defense doctrine between the two countries. Mr. Omirou called on the American mediators on the Cyprus issue to exert pressure on Ankara in order to achieve total demilitarization of the island, so that tension be reduced and a solution to the problem be found.

    [07] ALBANIA TO BE LINKED THRΟUGH OPTIC FIBERS WITH GREECE, MONTENEGRO

    Gjirocaster, 17/05/1998 (MPA) Albania's state-owned telecommunications company "TELECOM" ids the country's most powerful and profitable state- owned company that has gone from merely-surviving in 1990 to a conglomerate that has provided automatic phone lines to most of the suburban areas of the country. According to data provided by the general Directorate of Telecommunication, 1998 features an investment plan that amounts to 25 million dollars and part of the three-to-four year plan is to link the country with Greece and Montenegro with optic fibers.

    Άγκυρα, 17/05/1998 (MΠΕ-AA) Ανησυχία επικρατεί στην τουρκική κυβέρνηση μετά την ανακοίνωση του αμερικανικού υπουργείου Εξωτερικών το οποίο καταλογίζει στην Άγκυρα την ευθύνη για το αδιέξοδο στο Κυπριακό.

    Όπως έκανε γνωστό ο εκπρόσωπος του τουρκικού υπουργείου Εξωτερικών, Νετσάτι Ουτκάν, ο εκπρόσωπος του State Department, Τζέημς Ρούμπιν, απέδωσε στους χειρισμούς της τουρκικής πλευράς την αποτυχία των προσφάτων συνομιλιών που πραγματοποίησε στην Κύπρο ο ειδικός απεσταλμένος των ΗΠΑ, Ρίτσαρντ Χολμπρουκ.

    Ο κ. Ουτκάν υποστήριξε πως οι ΗΠΑ θα μπορούσαν εξίσου να καταλογίσουν ευθύνες και στην ελληνοκυπριακή πλευρά για την την ανυποχώρητη στάση της στο ζήτημα λέγοντας πως για τη σωστή αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος "απαιτείται ισότιμη και ισορροπημένη στάση των ΗΠΑ απέναντι και στις δύο κοινότητες του νησιού".

    Ο εκπρόσωπος του τουρκικού υπουργείου Εξωτερικών ζήτησε από τον Επιτετραμένο της πρεσβείας των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών να μεταφέρει τις δηλώσεις του στον Τζέημς Ρούμπιν υπογραμμίζοντας τις επιφυλάξεις της Άγκυρας για την στάση των ΗΠΑ.

    [09] ΤΟ ΖΑΓΚΡΕΜΠ ΔΕΝ ΕΠΕΒΑΛΕ ΤΟΝ ΕΚΛΕΚΤΟ ΤΟΥ ΣΤΟΥΣ ΚΡΟΑΤΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΒΟΣΝΙΑΣ

    Μόσταρ, 17/05/1998 (MΠΕ-TANJUNG) Στην πέμπτη σύνοδο του κόμματος Κροατικής Δημοκρατικής Ενότητας της Βοσνίας, που διεξήχθη χθες στο Μόσταρ, νέος πρόεδρος του κόμματος εκλέχθηκε ο υπουργός Άμυνας της Κροατομουσουλμανικής Ομοσπονδίας Άντε Γέλαβιτς ο οποίος μετά από μία επεισοδιακή συνεδρίαση έλαβε πάνω από 70% των ψήφων.

    Στην αρχή της συνόδου ως πρόεδρος προτάθηκε ο υπουργός Υγείας της Κροατομουσουλμανικής Ομοσπονδίας, Μπόζο Λιούμπιτς, ευνοούμενος του Ζάγκρεμπ και μοναδικός υποψήφιος που θα αντικαταστούσε τον πρόεδρο του HDZ της Βοσνίας, Μπόζο Ράιτς.

    Μετά από έντονες αντιπαραθέσεις, η σκληροπυρηνική πτέρυγα πρότεινε ως δεύτερο υποψήφιο τον Άντε Γέλαβιτς, ο οποίος θεωρείται μετριοπαθέστερος από τον Ράιτς, αλλά όχι τόσο θερμός υποστηρικτής της συμφιλίωσης όσο ο κ. Λιούμπιτς.

    Σε μία ύστατη προσπάθεια με σκοπό την εκλογή του κ. Λιούμπιτς, ο σύμβουλος του προέδρου της Κροατίας, Φράνιο Τούτζμαν, Ίβιτσα Πάσαλιτς κάλεσε δημόσια τον κ. Γέλαβιτς να αποσύρει την υποψηφιότητα του, αλλά εκείνος αρνήθηκε.

    Τέλος ο κ. Λιούμπιτς αποσύρθηκε λέγοντας ότι το κάνει για το συμφέρον της κροατικής ενότητας και κατόπιν οι σύνεδροι υποστήριξαν τον κ. Γέλαβιτς.

    Πολιτικοί παρατηρητές σημειώνουν ότι το HDZ της Βοσνίας θεωρείται παρακλάδι του κυβερνώντος κόμματος της Κροατίας και ότι την πολιτική του κόμματος υποδεικνύουν σκληροπυρηνικοί Κροάτες, οι οποίοι θεωρούν την περιοχή της Βοσνίας που βρίσκεται υπό τον έλεγχό τους αναπόσπαστο τμήμα της Κροατίας και ως πρόεδρο τους αναγνωρίζουν τον πρόεδρο της Κροατίας, Φράνιο Τούτζμαν.

    Υπενθυμίζεται ότι ο ύπατος αντιπρόσωπος της Διεθνούς Κοινότητας στη Βοσνία Κάρλος Γουέστεντορπ στο πλαίσιο των αρμοδιοτήτων του αντικατέστησε κάποιους Κροάτες δημόσιους λειτουργούς επειδή αρνούνταν να συνεργαστούν και κρατούσαν εχθρική στάση απέναντι στους μη Κροάτες πρόσφυγες.

    Όπως φάνηκε η Κροατία υπό τις διεθνείς πιέσεις παραιτήθηκε από την υποστήριξη των εκπροσώπων της σκληροπηρυνικής πτέρυγας στη Βοσνία και το Ζάγκρεμπ σύμφωνα με πηγές της χθεσινής Συνόδου επέμενε αλλά ανεπιτυχώς για τη μοναδική υποψηφιότητα του μετριοπαθούς Μπόζο Λιούμπιτς ως προέδρου του HDZ της Βοσνίας.
