    [01] 48,6% OF A BULGARIAN CEMENT INDUSTRY WAS BOUGHT BY "TITAN"

    Athens, 25/04/1998 (MPA) The Greek cement industry "Titan" bought 48,6% of the Bulgarian Plevenski Cement A.D. based in Pleven.

    The purchase of a large part of the Bulgarian cement industry is expected to give a significant boost to the efforts of the Greek cement company to expand its presence to the Balkan production sector. Plevenski Cement A.D. has an annual output of 400.000 tons of cement and covers 20% of the Bulgarian needs.

    The Bulgarian state, which owns 49% of the company's shares, expressed the intention to offer for purchase about 10% of its shares to the company employees and the rest 40% to investors.

    [02] FOREIGN LEADERS PRAISE THE WORK OF KARAMANLIS

    Athens, 25/04/1998 (MPA) Many foreign leaders praised the personality of Konstantinos Karamanlis among them, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl who characterized him as a great European, British prime minister Tony Blair who stressed that the ex-president has become part of history as well as, UN secretary-general Kofi Annan and Pope John-Paul B'.

    The most impressive statement was made by Turkish president Suleiman Demirel, who said that Konstantinos Karamanlis contributed to the development of the Greek-Turkish friendship.

    Participating in the mourning of the Greek people, the US embassy in Athens remained closed yesterday, the day of the funeral of Konstantinos Karamanlis.

    Former Bulgarian Communist leader Todor Zivkov in statements he made on Karamanlis, that were published in the Sofia newspaper "Pari", mentions that Karamanlis was honest in the talks they had. Mr. Zivkov stated that the big move for the improvement of the Greek-Bulgarian relations was made when Karamanlis went to Bulgaria and stated that the two countries were not enemies and Greece is a friend of Bulgaria.

    [03] THE EU FOREIGN MINISTERS WILL MEET ON MONDAY

    Athens, 25/04/1998 (MPA) A new round of pressures on Greece to lift its veto against the EU funding of Turkey is expected on Monday. The British presidency intends to exert pressures in the meeting of the EU foreign ministers' council.

    Athens is expected to reiterate the position that it can not free the EU funds if Ankara continues to refuse to bring the issue of the Imia islets to The Hague.

    [04] NEW TENSION BETWEEN THE OA MANAGEMENT AND ITS EMPLOYEES

    Athens , 25/04/1998 (MPA) New tension is being created between the Olympic Airways management and the state airline's employees as a result of the opposition expressed by the pilots and the flying crews regarding the new flight program which includes cuts on certain foreign flights regarded as especially profitable.

    The flying crews have decided to launch nine 3hour work stoppages from Monday till Friday.

    Olympic Airways president Mr. Tsakiridis pointed out that the economic situation of the state airline has deteriorated dramatically.

    [05] TSOCHATZOPOULOS IS IN SKOPJE

    Skopje, 25/04/1998 (MPA) Greek minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos is on a formal visit to Skopje today for talks with his FYROM counterpart Lazar Kitanowski.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos will discuss issues concerning the expansion of cooperation between the two countries in the sector of defense as well as, the planned Balkan Rapid Intervention Force, with the creation of which disagree both Skopje and Tirana. The talks will also focus on the latest developments in Kosovo.

    [06] THE 17.000 EU COMMISSION EMPLOYEES WILL GO ON A STRIKE

    Brussels, 25/04/1998 (MPA) The 17.000 EU Commission employees will go on a strike starting next week in protest against the proposal to abolish their permanency at work.

    A 24hour strike will be held next Thursday and the employees are expressing their intention to organize drastic mobilizations after the failure of their unions to reach a compromise with the EU officials.

    The strike is expected to paralyze the executive body of the European Union in a crucial period as the Summit meeting of the founding members of the European Economic and Monetary Union will be held in 2 days.

    [07] THE LEADER OF ND WAS ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN DEMOCRATIC UNION

    Vienna, 25/04/1998 (MPA) Leader of Greek right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis was elected yesterday vice-president of the European Democratic Union in which participate most European conservative parties.

    On the sidelines of the European Democratic Union conference, that takes place in Salzburg, Austria leader of Cypriot governing party "Democratic Alarm" Nikos Anastasiadis met twice with Turkish prime minister Mesut Yilmaz, who agreed to consider the likelihood of promoting his party's relations with the "Democratic Alarm".

    [08] GREEK PARLIAMENT DEPUTIES ARE IN IRAQ

    Baghdad, 25/04/1998 (MPA) A group of Greek Parliament deputies arrived in Iraq yesterday via Amman.

    The deputies brought with them 120 kilos of medicines that will be distributed to Iraqis in need, while they will also visit schools, hospitals and nursery homes.
