    [01] MASS EXODUS FOR THE THREE-DAY VACATION OF SHROVE MONDAY

    The exodus of the big cities' residents for the three-day vacation of Shrove Monday is expected to be a massive one. Traffic police in the effort to make the trip easier for the thousands of motorists has put into force emergency measures along the national road network and urge motorists not to consume alcoholic drinks, to wear seat-belts and to observe traffic regulations.

    Meanwhile, the Greek Railway Organization has put more trains to destinations like Thessaloniki in the north and the Peloponnese in the south in order to facilitate the travelers.

    [02] CHANGES IN THE ELECTION PROCESS

    Minister of interior Alekos Papadopoulos introduced changes in the election process that are included in a proposed draft bill.

    The new regulations introduce the abolition of voting booklets and the adoption of a special election number for each voter, while through the assistance of municipal authorities new voting registers will be drawn up. Also, voters will exercise their right to vote in the place of their residence and polling stations will be guarded by the police and not be soldiers.

    [03] ARCHBISHOP SERAPHIM'S STATE OF HEALTH HAS FURTHER DETERIORATED

    The state of health of Archbishop of Athens and All of Greece, Seraphim has further deteriorated. According to the medical bulletin that was issued at noon today, the state of his health has further deteriorated and the infection diagnosed is being treated with antibiotics that have affected negatively vital organs such as, the brain and the liver.

    The doctors speculate that everything depend on how long his brain will continue to work.

    [04] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT CLERIDES TAKES THE OATH OF OFFICE TODAY

    The re-elected Cypriot president Glafkos Clerides takes the oath of office today and will pledge to respect the country's Constitution in a swearing- in ceremony before the Parliament. Immediately afterwards, he will present his government's program.

    Mr. Clerides, who was re-elected to the presidency for a new five-year term, is the fourth Cypriot president elected to the country's supreme post in the 38 years of the Cypriot Republic.

    Greek undersecretary of foreign affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis, who is on a 6- day visit to Cyprus in order to be briefed on the developments concerning the Cyprus issue, met with US ambassador to Nicosia Kenneth Bril.

    The two men met at the residence of Greek ambassador to Nicosia Kiriakos Rodousakis. Mr. Kranidiotis will return to Athens on Shrove Monday.

    [06] PLAN FOR THE SOLUTION OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM PUBLISHED IN THE BRITISH MAGAZINE "THE ECONOMIST"

    A plan for the solution of the Cyprus problem was published in the British magazine "The Economist".

    The plan provides for a two-zone Cyprus, with two Parliaments, loose central government and a rotating presidency. Also, according to the plan, about 5.000 Turkish soldiers will remain on the island and compensation will be given to those who have lost their properties. Based on the plan, the Turkish occupied regions of Morfu and Varosia will be returned to the Greek Cypriots.

    [07] THE ALBANIAN GOVERNMENT WILLTAKE TOUGH MEASURES

    The government of Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano appears determined to take strong measures to restore order and normality in Albania with the support of the international community.

    During the latest cabinet meeting, the Albanian prime minister attacked the Democratic party of former president Sali Berisha accusing it of being responsible for the existing situation.

    Prime minister Nano, referring to the recent incidents in the town of Skoder, the riot in the Tirana prison and the destruction of the main water reservoir, indirectly blamed Mr. Berisha's party and stated that the majority of the Albanian people will not allow to thieves, murderers and fundamentalists to destroy their lives.
