NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANS[C] EUROPENEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] THE WORLD COUNCIL OF HELLENES ABROAD MEETS IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 16:08 GMT+2Thessaloniki 7 February (MPA)The presiding board of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, meets in Thessaloniki today and tomorrow with the participation of Greeks abroad general secretary Mr. Lambrinidis and president of the parliamentary committee of Greeks abroad Mr. Niotis.They will discuss the program of action that will be followed in the next two years, the further establishment of the four regional SAE, the developments and prospects concerning the issues of Greek national importance, the budget and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The presiding board is scheduled to meet with minister of culture Evangelos Venizelos to discuss the organizing of the Young Greeks Abroad Olympiad and the cooperation with SAE in the organizing of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. [02] AUTHORITIES IN EVROS ARE IN A STATE OF ALERTWeb Posted: 16:08 GMT+2Thessaloniki 7 February (MPA)Local authorities in Evros, in north-eastern Greece, are in a state of alert in case the Evros river breaks its banks as its water level is dangerously high due to heavy rainfall. The emergency plan "Xenokratis", used in case of natural disasters, is in effect while the damages caused in the region by the bad weather are extensive.The railway line of Alexandroupolis-Ormenio is closed, while the drivers using the national road network face serious problems. Thousands of hectares of cultivated land have been destroyed while parts of the dykes, constructed to protect the villages in the region, have been swept away. He started writing literature in 1950. His work dealt with social problems and won international recognition. His books have been translated into many languages. He wrote over 300 novels and he was honored with the Rontiris prize. The candidates for the presidency are incumbent president Mr. Glafkos Clerides, Mr. Giorgos Iakovou, Mr. Vasos Lyssarides, Mr. Giorgos Vasiliou, Mr. Alexis Galanos, Mr. Nikos Rolandis, and Mr. Nikos Koutsou.Based on the latest opinion polls, the candidates running for the presidency in the second round of the presidential elections on February 15, will be Mr. Clerides and Mr. Iakovou. The registered voters are 446.731, while for the first time the 18yearolds will have the right to vote. [C] EUROPE[06] THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE CALLS ON TURKEY TO GIVE PRIORITY TO THE HEALTH AND LIFE OF MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDRENWeb Posted: 16:08 GMT+2Strasbourg 7 February (MPA)The Council of Europe calls on Turkey to give priority to the health and life of mothers and their children and not to military spending, based on a decision adopted by representatives of 40 European states in Strasbourg after a joint appeal made by the foreign ministers of Germany and France.According to the responsible Council of Europe committee, mortality among mothers and children in Turkey is 10 times higher compared to a number of other countries. Specifically, according to facts provided by the OECD, 100 mothers out of 100.000 and 60 infants out of 1.000 died in Turkey in 1993, while the average in most countries at the same period was 10 mothers out of 100.000 and 6 infants out of 1.000. Based on the data provided by the OECD, there are huge problems of illiteracy as well as, problems in the distribution of health services and in the access to the right health centers, while the number of families receiving health benefits is limited.
