    [01] THE FARMERS ANNOUNCED NEW MOBILIZATIONS

    The farmers in Greece escalate their mobilizations as a result of the prime minister's refusal to meet with their representatives and after the statement made by minister of agriculture Stefanos Tzoumakas that it is impossible to meet all of their demands.

    The farmers have blocked the road leading to the city of Karditsa, while their organizing committee in Thessaly has announced that they will park their tractors along the Athens-Thessaloniki main road network on Monday in a show of protest.

    [02] THE GENERAL CONFEDERATION OF LABOR THREATENS WITH A NEW STRIKE

    The Greek General Confederation of Labor threatens with a new 24-hour strike in case the Parliament approves a provision on Monday which is included in the new tax bill and provides for the abolition of certain benefits enjoyed by the employees in the public sector agencies.

    During the voting, the Confederation of Labor will hold a rally outside the Parliament building, while work stoppages will be held by the workers in the mass transportation sector. Prime minister Kostas Simitis stressed that the government will not back out on the issue.

    [03] THE 6TH FLEET FLAGSHIP IS IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki 31 January (MPA)

    The US 6th Fleet flagship "La Salle" is in Thessaloniki for a visit that will last until February 4.

    This is the first visit of the flagship to Thessaloniki. The ship is 170 meters long and has a crew of 425 sailors and 25 officers. On board the flagship is the 6th Fleet commander admiral Charles Abbot.

    The formal reception, which will be held on board the "La Salle" this evening, will be attended by US ambassador to Athens Nicholas Burns and by local authorities.

    [04] THE TURKISH CARGO SHIP THAT RUN AGROUND NEAR KOS WAS TOWED AWAY

    The Turkish cargo ship that run aground last Wednesday in the sea region of the south-eastern Aegean island of Kos was towed away today with the assistance of two Greek tugboats.

    The ship remains in the region to be examined by specialists.

    [05] THE MINISTER OF FINANCE WILL VISIT LONDON ON FEBRUARY 4-8

    Greek minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou will be on a formal visit to London on February 4-8, at the invitation of the British Industries' Association (CBI).

    The invitation was issued to Mr. Papantoniou on the occasion of a one-day meeting on "Greece in the new millennium" that will be held on February 5. During the event will be examined the business prospects and the investment opportunities available in Greece.

    [06] THE GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER WILL VISIT ALBANIA

    German foreign minister Klaus Kinkel will visit Albania on February 6. Mr. Kinkel will meet with Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano, foreign minister Paskal Milo and opposition party leaders.

    The talks will focus on the issue of regional cooperation in the Balkans.

    [07] TURKEY VIOLATES HUMAN RIGHTS ACCORDING TO A US REPORT

    A US State Department report condemns the human rights situation in Turkey.

    Specifically, the report refers to the violation of the Kurdish minority rights, while it also points out the violation of the freedom of the press which was displayed in 1997 through the imprisonment of many journalists.

    [08] KARADAYI-TZOGANIS SECRET MEETING ACCORDING TO "MILLIYET"

    The Turkish newspaper "Milliyet" mentions today that the Chief of the Turkish General Army Staff general Ismail Hakki Karadayi had a secret meeting with his Greek counterpart Athanasios Tzoganis. According to the newspaper, the meeting was held in Vienna on the sidelines of the Western European Union meeting.

    According to press information, the Karadayi-Tzoganis meeting, on which no official announcement was made, had focused on ways to ease the tension observed in the Aegean in the past months. "Milliyet" stresses that it is worth mentioning that the meeting was held immediately after it was announced that Turkey will hold a military exercise in the Aegean scheduled to start on February 3.
