    Web Posted: 12:10 GMT+2

    Athens, January 6 (MPA)

The Greek government is observing the Turkish air-and-sea military exercise currently underway in the Aegean Sea.

The Turkish military leaders have called off the programmed manoeuvres today, thereby upholding the Papoulias-Yilmaz memorandum of 1988.

Meanwhile, Thursday, January 8, the exercise will be conducted in the region off of the islands of Mykonos and Ikaria. Greece has objected to this part of the exercise by stating that the sea region belongs to Greece's air space and as such there is no "channel" for the Turkish aircraft to pass through.

Mr. Tsovolas suffered a heart attack during the Christmas holidays and on Sunday was taken into the hospital.

Further reports on the course of Mr. Tsovolas's health are expected this afternoon.

[03] ROME TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON KURDISH REFUGEES

    Web Posted: 12:10 GMT+2

    Rome, January 6 (MPA)

Almost in their entirety, the European governments are expressing their opposition to the vast exodus of Kurdish people from Turkey.

In Rome tomorrow, an international conference of police forces from five European countries is to take place in an effort to reach a solution to the incoming wave of illegal immigrants towards the countries that enforce the Shengen Accord.

Representing the Greek police will be its chief Vasilopoulos. Also invited to take part in the conference is the second-in-command official of the Turkish police force, since the Europeans deem that Turkey is responsible for the "flight of the Kurds".

[04] TONI BLAIR: CYPRUS' ACCESSION SHOULD BE ACHIEVED UNCONDITIONALLY
