    [01] THE CHRISTIAN WORLD CELEBRATES THE BIRTH OF CHRIST

    The birth of the Son of God is celebrated today by the Christian world. In his message Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew stresses that the light of hope shines in the eyes of all people in spite of the tears and the disasters faced by humanity.

    President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos appealed to the Greeks living abroad to protect unity.

    Archbishop Seraphim wishes love, peace and deliverance from the suffering caused by evil and misfortune, while Archbishop Anastasios of Albania stresses that Jesus is still seen as a stranger by the societies that have adopted violence and hypocricy.

    [02] 12 TURKISH FIGHTER JETS VIOLATED THE GREEK AIR SPACE TODAY

    Twelve Turkish F-16 and Phantom fighter jets violated the Greek air space and the Athens FIR today and approached the coasts of the islands of Skiros and Psara at a distance of 7 miles.

    The radar of the Greek Air Force showed that 20 violations took place and 8 Greek fighter jets took off and intercepted the Turkish aircraft.

    The head of the Air Force characterized the Turkish violations as unprecedented provocation, as Ankara violated the Papoulias-Yilmaz agreement according to which, no military activities can take place during national anniversaries and religious holidays.

    [03] THE "BLACK BOX" WILL SHED LIGHT ON THE UKRAINIAN PLANE CRASH

    The "black box" of the Ukrainian plane that crashed over a week ago in the Pieria Mountains of northern Greece will give answers to the questions concerning the tragic accident. Already, the decoding process has begun in Hanover, Germany.

    Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos did not rule out the likelihood according to which, the passengers of the plane might have been more than 71.

    The search continues at the scene of the crash for the location of two small children, a brother and a sister, and a policeman, who were on board the plane.

    [04] INCIDENTS IN A SMALL ALBANIAN VILLAGE

    Serious incidents took place last night against people living in the village of Lazarati. The incidents were caused by hooded Albanians, who blew up a bridge and destroyed cars. According to information, a 30yearold Greek from the city of Ioannina was injured.

    The villagers were protesting against the arrest of 6 people, who are being accused of crimes committed during the popular uprising in Albania in early 1997.

    [05] BERISHA COULD FACE A COURT TRIAL FOR THE INCIDENTS IN THE ALBANIAN POPURAL UPRISING

    Former Albanian president Sali Berisha and his government could be led before justice accused of being responsible for the incidents that broke out in Albania in the period from January to June 1997, based on the findings issued by the parliamentary committee that examines the causes of the bloody clashes that had led the country to complete disarray.

    The committee president stated that the last appeal issued by Berisha calling the people not to hand over the weapons they had seized, proves who was giving the orders to the army and the police for the massacre of the Albanian people.

    [06] THE US SECRETARY OF DEFENSE MADE A SHORT VISIT TO FYROM

    US Secretary of Defense William Cohen made a short visit to FYROM on his way to Bosnia and met with president Kiro Gligorov and ministers of defense and foreign affairs Lazar Kitanovski and Blagojia Hadjinski, while he also visited the US soldiers participating in the peace-keeping force of UNPRENDER deployed in this former Yugoslav Republic.

    President Gligorov expressed satisfaction for the course of the US-FYROM relations especially in the military sector, while he characterized as very positive the presence of US soldiers in the UN peace-keeping force and their contribution to the safeguarding of peace and stability in the region.

    The US Secretary of Defense referring to NATO's enlargement stated that the United States support the proposal according to which, the alliance's doors must be open to all the democratic countries that want to become members.

    [07] THE UN ISSUED AN APPEAL FOR HUMANITARIAN AID OF 406 MILLION DOLLARS TO FORMER YUGOSLAVIA

    United Nations' efforts for a humanitarian aid of 406 million US dollars to former Yugoslavia in 1998 were launched from the Croat capital of Zagreb, while similar moves have been scheduled to take place in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Geneva.

    Of the 406 US million dollars, 263 million will be granted to Bosnia and the rest to Croatia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and FYROM.

    In 1998 the UN will turn its attention to issues concerning the return of refugees to their homes, the distribution of humanitarian aid and the reconstruction efforts that are already in progress.
