    [01] TSOCHATZOPOULOS: TURKEY HAS EXPANSIONIST ASPIRATIONS

    Greek Minister of Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos gave a tough response to Ankara's destabilizing policy, from Sofia where he attended the Summit of the South-Eastern European Defense Ministers.

    Mr.Tsochatzopoulos pointed out that no dialogue can start with Turkey for as long as Ankara continues its provocation and expansionist aspirations.

    Greek Minister of Public Order Giorgos Romeos completed his visit to Washington with his meeting with FBI Director Louis Freeh.

    Mr.Romeos had also meetings with CIA Director George Tenet, while he visited the Training Academy for FBI personnel, where he was briefed on the new training programmes and had the opportunity to watch a presentation of the new technology used in the identification of fingertips.

    In a press conference, mr.Romeos stressed that the Greek government cooperates closely with the United States and other European countries to counter terrorism and organized crime.

    [03] HALBROOKE MADE COMPLIMENTARY COMMENTS ON PANGALOS AND CEM

    US Presidential envoy for Cyprus Richard Halbrooke underlined the positive stance of the Greek governmentin the efforts for the solution of the Greek- Turkish differences, stressing at the same time, the abilities of Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem.

    The statement was made by mr.Halbrooke after his meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides in New York.

    [04] COHEN: THE US WOULD FAVOUR CONFIDENCE-BUILDING-MEASURES BETWEEN GREECE AND TURKEY

    The view that the United States would favour confidence-building-measures between Greece and Turkey on disputes that have to do with territorial claims, was expressed by US Secretary of Defense William Cohen in a statement he made to MPA.

    The US Secretary of Defense stated that the goal of the Sofia meeting was among others to have an exchange of views by the Greek and Turkish Ministers of Defense. He expressed the hope that the two sides will exercise self-restraint, passions will calm down and a peaceful negotiation will be made on all the disputes instead of having an increase of tensions.

    He also stated that NATO and the United States believe that it is for the interest of all countries to have restrictions in the proliferation of weapons systems. The US Secretary of Defense said that if NATO expansion becomes feasible and includes those countries that meet the most pre- conditions, stability will be further promoted.

    [05] CLERIDES: THE ISSUES OF CYPRUS' DEFENSE ARE NON NEGOTIABLE

    The issues of Cyprus' defense are non negotiable stressed Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides from New York where he arrived yesterday.

    Mr.Clerides on Monday will address the 52nd UN General Assembly and he will have two meetings with US Presidential envoy for Cyprus Richard Halbrooke.

    Responding to questions made by reporters, he said that the issues concerning Cyprus' defense are not negotiable, except within a general framework that will lead to demilitarization. Mr.Clerides stated that if this framework is found then the issue of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles will also be discussed.

    [06] THE 2ND ROUND OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD IN SERBIA TOMORROW

    The second round of presidential elections will be held in Serbia and Montenegro tomorrow. The candidates for the Serb presidency are Zoran Lilic, who got 35,7% of the votes in the first round and ultra-nationalist Voicislav Seseli with 27,8%.

    Thirteen parties of the opposition are boycotting the ballot, headed by Zoran Djindjic's Democratic Party, who was recently removed from the post of the mayor of Belgrade.

    [07] REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE WILL BE IN TIRANA TOMORROW

    Two representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will be in Tirana tomorrow and they will try to settle the issue of the three Metropolites, who were appointed by the Patriarchate but they are still not allowed to enter the country.

    According to Albanian press publications, the Albanian President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have already refused to meet with the two representatives of the Patriarchate.

    [08] THE 43RD SUMMIT OF ATLANTIC ASSOCIATIONS OF EUROPE IS HELD IN SOFIA

    Greek Minister of Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos delivered a speech of great significance today in the 43rd Summit of the Atlantic Associations of Europe that is being held in Sofia.

    Mr.Tsochatzopoulos pointed out that after the Madrid Summit there is a new NATO and reiterated Greece's decision to assist Bulgaria, Romania and Slovenia in every way in their efforts to become NATO members in 1999.

    The Greek Minister of Defense stated that security at an international level is a complex issue that depends on the political, economic, military and social situation that prevails in the region.

    He included among the destabilizing threats targeting international order, the religious fundamentalism and international terrorism.

    [09] THE SOFIA SUMMIT ENDED WITH THE ADOPTION OF A JOINT DECLARATION

    The Defense Ministers of South-Eastern European countries Summit meeting ended in Sofia last night with the adoption of a joint declaration in which they confirmed the determination of their governments to promote good neighbourly relations and constructive cooperation in the sectors of defense and security.

    The Defense Ministers expressed the belief that NATO is the main power in the building of the European security always in cooperation with the Western European Union and the OSCE. Also, they stressed the important role played by regional political initiatives such as, the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, the Summit meeting of the Foreign Ministers of South-Eastern European countries and the Initiative for the cooperation in South-Eastern Europe.

    Also, they expressed the satisfaction of their countries for the fact that NATO has declared its intention to issue invitations for membership to democratic countries in the next few years. At the same time, they recognized that the countries in the region should raise the level of their armed forces and security to such a degree that will serve the overall political and strategic interests of the Alliance and strengthen the European security and stability as a whole.
