The decision to appoint mr.Burns to the position of the US Ambassador to Athens proves that Greece and the wider region have a great importance for the US President and the US Secretary of State as mr.Burns is considered by analysts in Washington as one of the most able US diplomats with great ability in the diplomatic maneuvering and strategic thinking.

Mark Paris served in the White House National Security Council until last April as a director on Near East and South Asia issues, while in the previous two years he was deputy assistant Secretary of State on Near East issues.

The appointment of the two new Ambassadors will have to be approved by the US Senate.
