[01] AGREEMENT ON THE SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT OF ALBANIANS IN GREECE

The contacts the Greek government delegation had with the Albanian government in Tirana brought an agreement on the seasonal employment of Albanians in Greece and the issuing of a residence green card.

Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano, in a meeting he had with Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and other members of the government delegation, underlined the significance his country gives to its relations with Greece.

[02] GATSIOUDIS WON THE BRONZE MEDAL IN THE JAVELIN COMPETITION

Kostas Gatsioudis won the bronze medal in the javelin competition yesterday. It is the first medal won by a Greek athlete in the 6th IAAF World Championships taking place in Athens.

This morning the Greek champion in the triple jump Christos Meletoglou qualified for the finals, while Lambros Papakostas will compete later in the afternoon in the high jump finals. Another Greek athlete, Panagiotis Stroumbakos will compete in the 800m semifinals race.

[03] CENTER OF STUDY-DEVEL/MNT OF GREEK CULTURE IN BLACK SEA VISITS UKRAINE

A delegation from the Center of Study and Development of Greek Culture in the Black Sea has conducted a six-day visit to the Ukraine, on the occasion of the "Great Holiday" events held every year on August 2 at the mostly Greek inhabited village of Cermalik.

The delegates visited Odessa and Greek villages in the region and they handed the Greek consul-general of Marioupolis a monetary contribution for the building of a church at the vilage of Satarnas. A.F.

[04] CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE "THESSALONIKI 97": GREEKS IN AUSTRALIA

The Cultural Capital of Europe "Thessaloniki '97" Organisation is to shed light into the unknown aspects of the Greek immigration flow to Australia, through its "Ek Peraton" programme which addresses issues related to Hellenism abroad.

One of the programme's events, a photography exhibit of Efi Alexaki's works, along with the collaboration of sociologist- historian Leonard Janiszewski, is to be displayed in the Art Gallery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's Polytechnic School. A.F.

[05] COUNCIL OF GREEKS ABROAD TAKES INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT GREEKS IN GEORGIA

The Council of Greeks Abroad (SAE) is to embark on the most crucial phase of its humanitarian mission to Greeks in Georgia in September, when SAE president Andrew Athens will travel to the region for a five-day visit, accompanied by health experts.

The Council's primary task is to provide immediate relief for the most basic medical needs of Greeks in Georgia and will grant the local authorities with 28 thousand dollars for the founding of a Medical Diagnosis Center. SAE is to also embark on a fund- raiser, aiming at $374,000, for the creation of a number of medical centers throughout Georgia.

According to Mr. Athens, SAE's vision is not to merely grant periodical emergency aid in the form of mercy, but, rather, to contribute in a decisive manner to Hellenism's development and strengthening. A.F.

[06] GREEKS FROM PONTUS LIVING IN US-CANADA TO MEET AT PHILADELPHIA IN AUGUST

Greeks from Pontus who are curently living in the United States and Canada have embarked on an information campaign that will shed light on the genocide of Greeks from Pontus by the Turks during 1916-1923.

The conference of Pontus-Greeks from Canada and US is to be held in Philadelphia between the 29-31 of August. A.F.

[07] 200 PEOPLE DIED IN A PASSENGER AIRPLANE CRASH

The Korean Airlines, Boeing 747, had taken off from Seul and its destination was Guam Airport. The crash occured while the airplane was preparing to land in bad weather.

Rescue crews continue the search for survivors and as it was made known by the local authorities, 32 people have been found alive.

[08] THE BRITISH PRESS LAUNCHED AN ATTACK AGAINST THE IAAF PRESIDENT

The British press launched an attack against the IAAF President Primo Nebiolo accusing him of playing a dirty game aimed at undermining the efforts made by Athens to host the 2004 Olympic Games.

The "Financial Times" maintains that mr.Nebiolo leads Rome's efforts to host the 2004 Olympic Games and he did not miss the chance to accuse the Greeks for the small number of spectators present in the 100m finals last weekend.

The "Daily Mail" accuses mr.Nebiolo of being a man with more ambitions than Hitler or Napoleon, while it expresses skepticism and doubt regarding his intentions. The newspaper also underlines that mr.Nebiolo must have been very glad to see the Olympic Stadium half empty. It should be reminded that mr.Nebiolo in the past had openly supported the Rome candidature for the hosting of the 2004 Olympic Games.

[09] THE CLERIDES-DENKTASH TALKS WILL BE HELD NEAR MONTREAUX, SWITZERLARD

A spokesman of the UN Secretary General stated that the second round of direct talks between Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, that are taking place under the auspices of the United Nations, will be held in a small-town hotel near Montreaux, Switzerland, in mid August away from reporters.

According to New York sources, the United Nations are very encouraged by the agreement reached by Clerides and Denktash on the issue of the missing since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and based on the existing indications, the UN officials will soon appoint a new representative to the Fact-Finding Committee for the Missing.

[10] OBSERVERS FROM FYROM WILL OVERSEE THE ELECTIONS IN SERBIA

Observers from FYROM will monitor the presidential and parliamentary elections in Serbia that are scheduled to take place on September 21.

Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Ambassador to Skopje mr.Zoran Yanatskovic has already made a formal request to FYROM's Parliament President Tito Petkofski.

[11] BELGRADE PRESS: HOLBROOKE WILL ASK MILOSEVIC TO TURN OVER KARADJIC

According to press reports in Belgrade, the United States former assistance Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke (the "architect" of the Dayton Agreement) is expected to ask Slobodan Milosevic to turn over Radovan Karadjic to the Hague.

According to the same press reports, Holbrooke would even be satisfied if Karadjic were to stop playing a role in the decion- making process regarding Bosnia's future in Pale. A.F.

[12] WILLIAM COHEN, US DEFENSE SECRETARY VOWS SUPPORT TO BULGARIA

The United States Secretary of Defense William Cohen has forwarded a message to the Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov wherein he vows his country's support to the reforms of Bulgaria's armed forces.

Mr. Cohen also adds that when the Defense Minister of Southeastern European countries meet in Sofia in October, the US could contribute to the development of the regional cooperation and development. A.F.
